Those living directly opposite the proposed site of a new McDonald’s drive-thru in Cowes have said ‘not in my backyard’, describing the location as ‘a terrible place’ for such a development.
One concerned local, who lives nearby in a listed cottage dating back to 1850, says they have received confirmation from McDonald’s representatives and the office of Richard Quigley MP that plans are moving forward for the fast-food chain to open a new restaurant and drive-thru in Cowes.
It was in April that Island Echo exclusively revealed that McDonald’s is looking to open in both Three Gates Road, Cowes and Newport Road, Lake – although a formal planning application has not yet been submitted.
The site in question is a greenfield plot directly opposite Greens Cottages and less than 325 metres from a primary school. The land is currently earmarked for 6 eco-friendly homes, described by locals as ‘much needed’ in the area.
A concerned resident has said:
“We live in Three Gates Road – a mostly residential street only a third of a mile long – and the site is directly opposite our cottage. It’s a terrible place for this to be happening.
“We have seen plans and spoken to McDonald’s representatives. We are obviously looking for ways to stop this from being approved.”
While some may see the protest as a classic case of ‘NIMBYism’ – opposing development on one’s doorstep – the resident says they are acting in the interest of preserving the character of the area and ensuring more appropriate development goes ahead.
A grassroots campaign has already been launched, with online and paper petitions gaining support from neighbours. A Facebook page and YouTube channel have been created to rally further opposition, and talks with local councillors are ongoing.

I don’t blame them, the McDonald’s in Ryde
is and always as been a total shambles with
traffic sometimes backing up towards
Bullen Road.
There is NO traffic control, never as been.
“It’s an accident waiting too happen”
These outlets attract loads of Numpty’s,
hence requiring larger premises for safety
reasons.
I would have shut the Ryde one down years ago,
they should be forced to move to a larger premises
either Neutrik’s empty site or the old Ice skating rink.
I agree with the cottage owners , it’s not an appropriate place for a McDonalds
Heaven forbid – let’s put a stop to all this progress and investment nonsense and think only of ourselves, shall we? Should be delighted that McDonald’s wants to invest in the Island. Change or decline. Simple.
No good for obesity though.
At least they now have the slimming jabs to assist with
their eating habits.
I would much rather see healthier eateries opening up
not all fast food.
More rubbish to litter our streets, everywhere you go
there is McDonald’s wrappers and cups etc
IW Council Planning have now been put on notice that they are being watched.
If it is correct that the proposed site lies inside the prohibited zone around the school, will IWC have the ba**s to stand up to Big Mac?
And that site behind Aldi is much better – the road junction is already there and it’s between existing commercial sites.
The Council are encouraging obesity, then in later
years these persons will be a burden on the state
due to eating this unhealthy trash.
The NIMBY brigade are back with their pitchforks!
As long as they purchased their pitchforks from
Hurst, best to support local businesses.
Some of McDonald’s food is so hard, they probably need
pitchforks to eat with.
Lol
Putting the McDonalds here would probably de-value the properties in the vicinity, if it has to go anywhere it may be better placed possibly at the end of the access road between Aldi and the garage.
