A rapist who slashed the throat of a paedophile whilst they were both locked up behind bars at HMP Isle of Wight has been handed a life sentence.
32-year-old Jack McRae, from Southampton, threw a jug of boiling water over convicted paedophile Alex Prosser before then slashing his throat with a makeshift knife.
Following the incident at Albany prison on 14th October 2022, McRae made admissions that he had wanted to kill Prosser, and he was subsequently charged with his attempted murder.
McRae, who was convicted of rape and false imprisonment just months before the attempted murder, initially pleaded not guilty to the offence but changed his plea to guilty in April this year. The 32-year-old has a history of violent offences against others and in 2015 escaped custody when he ran out of Southampton Crown Court, sparking a manhunt.
Prosser, from Port Talbot in Wales, was also jailed in 2022 after raping a young child and being caught with thousands of indecent images of children, some as young as 18 months old.
Appearing at Portsmouth Crown Court on Friday (22nd November), Jack William McRae, who was most recently incarcerated at HMP Long Lartin, was handed a life sentence with a minimum term of 14 years in prison.
DC Justin Pringle of Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has said:
“This was an incredibly vicious attack which left another prisoner with significant injuries.
“McRae was already in prison for serious and violent offences, and his outburst of violence on this particular occasion demonstrates the risk he poses. By his own admissions, he intended to kill that day.
“He will now continue to remain in prison for a significant period of time, and will be on licence for the rest of his life if he is ever released.”
