South Western Railway has confirmed that Island Line will be suspended from 19:00 on Saturday (20th August) until 07:00 on Sunday morning due to the knock-on effect of mainland RMT strikes.
The nationwide strike on Saturday is set to include Network Rail’s Electrical Control Room Operators (ECROs) working at Eastleigh Electrical Control Room, which provides power to the outer part of the South Western Railway (SWR) network, including the Island Line.
As a result, Network Rail will be unable to provide sufficient power to the Island Line during this period.
The final train from Shanklin will depart at 18:15 and run to Ryde Pier Head. The final train from Ryde Pier Head will depart at 18:45 and run to Ryde St John’s Road.
The first train on Sunday (21st August) will depart from Ryde St John’s Road at 07:33 and run to Ryde Pier Head.
SWR is in the process of arranging rail replacement services for Saturday night.
Staff at Network Rail and more than 2,100 SWR members are set to take strike action on Thursday 18th and Saturday 20th August, causing severe disruption. This is the first time that the Island Line has been impacted by the strikes, with the service running as normal during the periods of industrial action earlier this year.
Commenting, Island Line General Manager Mark Dunn said:
“We are very sorry that the knock-on impact of mainland rail strikes will inconvenience our customers on Saturday night and Sunday morning.
“We will be doing everything we can to keep our customers moving, and we’re in the process of arranging rail replacement services for Saturday night.”

This approach looks good

Well I didn’t think ALL the Union members on the island line didn’t strike?
So what is the difference between normal service and a strike??
This service is utterly useless 24/7!
As a result, Network Rail will be unable to provide sufficient power to the Island Line during this period.
…….
Got a cable under the solent that directly connects the line to them, then have they?
more like a lame excuse
I think it’s terrible! Something should be done about it.
Why did we spend all that money upgrading this line when the staff don’t appreciate it.
shut it down and tarmac the 6ft so we can drive on it or ride bikes
Great idea turn it into cycle track ,,,,keep those cyclist off main roads causing havoc
Tar mac the lot, a relief road which would cater for thousands each day, rather than something which caters for a few dozen at best.
