Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service were called to a refrigeration unit on fire in Totland this evening (Monday), with firefighters praising local residents and shop employees for their quick thinking.
2 appliances from Freshwater and Yarmouth were called to the Loco/Nisa store on The Broadway in Totland at around 21:00 following a 999 call reporting a refrigeration unit on fire.
Upon arrival of the first crew it was established that the quick-thinking employees of the shop had isolated the electrical supply to the unit and a neighbour came to the rescue equipped with a C02 fire extinguisher. The quick actions meant the fire was suppressed prior to the arrival of the 2 retained fire crews.
Firefighters dampened down the affected area before leaving the scene shortly before 22:00.
A spokesperson for Freshwater Fire Station said:
“All of these fast actions prevented the incident being much worse than it could have been.”

Lets hope the sensible action will be rewarded with at least a bag of squidgy tomatoes or near sell by date bag of buns each. Well done both
