Parents and guardians of children and teenagers in Newport have been issued with a warning by the Police after several youths were caught on camera jumping and climbing on high roofs.
Pictures captured by Newport Shopwatch members show several instances of young people climbing up onto rooftops – with some going as far as to jump between roofs.
It’s thought that those partaking in the dangerous pastime have been drinking and smoking whilst on the roofs, prompting serious concerns about their safety and the potential for them to fall.
Speaking on the force’s Facebook, PC Livvy said:
“These pictures have kindly been taken by members of our Newport Shopwatch group and im sure they give you the anxiety they give me.
“The rooftops are highly dangerous let alone the damage which is being caused to buildings whilst individuals are up there drinking/ smoking and picnicking!
“The children can get up there via fire escapes which cannot be removed. We will be dealing with any individuals we find trespassing on the properties.
“If you recognise your child in the pictures please pop into Newport Police Station and speak to me. I’m happy to come and give them some suitable advice…”

These kids should join the army cadets or similar, they can do all the jumping and swinging from trees they want and hopefully use their energy and adrenaline for something less distructive and unsociable.
Send them to Afghanistan..
Instead of ‘issuing a warning’ why not do your job and arrest them.
Why they warning the parents, they aren’t the ones doing it, no matter how old police should sort them out. shake them up a bit, they might think twice about doing it again.

Why is it down to the Police all the time to educate these kids. Until they are 18 years of age, they are minors, children in the eyes of UK law. Therefore, they are the legal responsibility of their parents or guardian. These kids parents probably don’t even know what they are getting up to. They should, they’re kid could end up dead or suffer a broken back or neck or if they get off lightly, broken legs. It’s s shame these kids don’t have anything or anywhere to go to keep them occupied and out of trouble. Nothing here on the island for kids to do really.

It is probably too late now for such types. Their parents have already lost touch and failed to discipline to the proper degree, the youths already drinking, smoking and engaging in anti-social behaviour.
We are seeing the results of our liberal permissive approach, with corporal punishment withdrawn.
Now many youths have become yobs, violent, drug taking and rebellious. Their great potential for good wasted.
Not all young people fortunately, for diligent devoted parents have produced some fine young people – just not these..
Sadly parents are not alowed to teach their kids right from wrong anymore, the state have taken control now.

When one of these kids has a serious accident, then the parents will take notice. Whatever goes on in young minds these days beggars belief to make them do this stupid and very dangerous thing.

A small minority. Most are far more cleaver. Better educated than ever. When you use a stereo type based on a small minority to class a large section of society, it’s call discrimination. Judging someone based on the actions of their peers is not only wrong but lazy.

The youth today seem to be not allowed to do anything,at least they are having fun and in the fresh air and not on there X box. We were all young once and most of us done far worse things,leave the kids alone and mind your own business!
I mostly agree with you. But they are breaking the law and endangering themselves and others. So these specific individuals need to be dealt with. But the government will not spend money on the people who pay tax and instead give it all to their business mates.
Agree ‘innit tho’, i did far worse things in the summer when i was teenager – one time, i got a job and earnt some money. Bad move.

Seems like I’ve touched loads of nerves then. I’ve lost count of the amount of comments of mine that have been deleted, and not one word of abuse or bad language in any of them. Freedom of speech has been eroded more and more, and this website certainly used to be a lot more free with its comment section than it is now.

I’ve had two removed today after being up for a while, had a few removed before.
I usually find it’s awaiting approval, and then it turns up later, but often if I look at the thread again, some comments will be gone. No reason given. So they show up for a time and then disappear later, even if they had a good few upvotes. Mine aren’t the only comments I’ve seen disappear. So no, it is not any incompetence on my part. If the comments are not being officially removed, then there must be some sort of glitch on the site that is causing it.
Dear editor, I for one think you are a victim of your own success, maybe invest on a new filter machine or something similar,but I think your main problem are your bias humans who say “it is rare for *us* to manually remove a comment”. What compleat and utter b.s. (I bet you don’t print this?).

Well I replied to someone yesterday pointing out it is not any incompetence on my part as it is happening all too often to others too, and that reply was there yesterday, with some upvotes, now it is gone.
There used to be videos on Youtube of people travelling across towns or cities by just jumping from roof to roof. The videos are probably still there, if anyone was interested enough to look, which I’m not. Isn’t it called roof hopping or something?It’s a thing anyway. Not something that seems sensible but then what does nowadays?
