Police are issuing a crime prevention reminder following a spike in the number of burglaries in West Wight, as previously reported by Island Echo.
Officers are reminding people to keep their doors and windows securely locked this Christmas and to make it seem like someone’s home, even if you’re out.
DS John Stirling, said:
“Over the past few months we’ve seen a slight increase in the number of burglaries in West Wight, with about 30 burglaries in the last six months.
“Increased police patrols have been put in place to reassure the community and deter would-be burglars, however in the run-up to Christmas I would like to remind people how to make their home safer.
“Securely lock your doors and windows, even when you’re home. Simple things, like leaving a radio on, or using a timer switch on the lights, can help make it look like someone’s home, even when they’re not, and this could deter a burglar”.
Police would like to hear from anyone who has witnessed any suspicious behaviour in the area and in particular men wearing yellow high visibility jackets. It comes after houses in Shorwell, Brighstone and Bouldnor have been broken into with reports of workman wandering around properties.
Anyone with information about any burglaries is urged to call 101 or the anonymous Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.
