Police investigating an alleged rape on the Isle of Wight discovered a crossbow inside their suspect’s house when they moved in to arrest him.
It was on Friday evening that officers arrived at the door of a 37-year-old man in East Cowes to detain and question him on suspicion of rape.
It is part of an ongoing investigation into an alleged serious sexual assault.
As officers searched the residential address, they discovered a crossbow and an amount of Class B drugs – namely cannabis. Both the weapon and drugs are said to to be unrelated to the rape investigation, with officers simply stumbling across the find during their enquiries.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has confirmed that a 37-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of rape, possession of Class B cannabis and possession of a weapon within a private property.
He has been released on bail until 15th November.

Just for clarity, it is not illegal to buy or own a crossbow, and ownership of one does not imply anything illegal at all.
I’m sure it was for decorative & aesthetic purposes only & played no part in any offence committed. I hope the poor woman attacked is safe & supported and gets justice

Under the Crossbows Act 1987, it is legal to buy a crossbow in England, Scotland and Wales, and owners are not required to register it or hold a licence.
On the other hand, a knife is a ‘weapon’ and I have several in my kitchen. So does everyone else. So in plod’s eyes we’re all guilty, which is just the way plod likes it.
