VIDEO: POLICE DESCEND ON BLACKWATER AS SCREAMS FOR HELP HEARD


UPDATED: Police and HM Coastguard descended on Blackwater near Newport earlier this morning (Sunday) due to concerns for the welfare of an individual. 

Screams for help resonating from a male voice were heard by local residents, prompting several calls to Police.

Coastguard Rescue helicopter 175 began conducting an aerial search of the area at around 07:30, focusing on the Gatcombe and Blackwater area before moving north along the cycle path and River Medina.

Multiple Police units took up position on the ground in the vicinity of Sandy Lane.

However, Island Echo understands that no persons have been located and therefore the search has now been called off.

UPDATE @ 10:21 – One eye witness has described to Island Echo how this morning’s search came about. They’ve said:

“We heard a male voice screaming for help over and over from a distance. We kept hearing it, getting louder and then more distant again. They were begging for help so we decided to ring the Police”.

Hampshire Constabulary have confirmed that they were called to the area at around 06:00 this morning.

A spokesperson has said:

“We received some calls from people concerned for the welfare of what sounded like someone shouting in the Blackwater Road area at around 6am.

“Officers conducted a search of the area, with help from colleagues from the fire service and the coastguard but no one was found.

“The search has been stood down.”
