A drink-driver from Devon who ‘panicked’ after he was stopped by Police also assaulted 5 emergency workers, a court has heard.
Nathan Bennett, 32, of White Park in Moreleigh, admitted 5x common assault of an emergency worker and drink driving when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court last week (Friday 28th November).
Prosecuting, Serena Edwards, told the court that on 31st October, Police stopped an Audi A3 on Esplanade in Ryde after it was seen to be driving erratically.
Upon stopping the vehicle, Bennett who was behind the wheel, made off from the scene prompting a brief foot-chase.
In the process of being arrested he became aggressive towards Police, kicking some and leaving marks on others.
A roadside breath test was conducted in which a reading of 72 – more than twice the limit – was returned.
The court heard how Bennett, of previous good character, was wearing heavy boots at the time of the incident.
Defending Bennett, a company owner, Tom Cooke told the court that his client went into ‘panic-mode’ after his tyre blew out and he was stopped by Police.
The case was adjourned until the 20th February when a pre-sentence report will be compiled.
