UPDATED: A pedestrian has been involved in a collision with a vehicle at Wootton Bridge this afternoon (Thursday), forcing the closure of the road in both directions.

The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service are on scene outside The Sloop Inn, where an elderly woman is understood to have been injured. The assistance of the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance has been requested.

Police are in attendance and are redirecting traffic having closed the road between The Cedars pub and The Sloop Inn.

Southern Vectis buses are diverting via The Downs until further notice.

UPDATE @ 17:28 –  Traffic is extremely heavy heading through the village of HavenStreet, as rush-hour traffic diverts around the collision.


A shuttle is operating between Newport and Wootton operating every 30 minutes. 

Routes 4 is currently suspended.

Route 9 is operating via Ryde, Beaper Shute, Brading, Yarbridge, Brading Downs and Staplers. There will be delays.

UPDATE @ 17:57 – Witnesses have told Island Echo that the pedestrian went under the wheels of the vehicle after stepping out into the road.

The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance has in the last few moments lifted off from Lakeside Park Hotel and is flying the elderly casualty to a mainland hospital.

The main Ryde to Newport road has been closed in both directions and is expected to remain closed for several hours whilst investigations are undertaken.

UPDATE @ 19:34 – Police have confirmed that the road is expected to remain closed until around 20:45.

UPDATE @ 20:20 – Wootton Bridge has now reopened in both directions following the conclusion of on-scene investigations by the mainland-based Collision Investigation Unit.

No further information has been released about the casualty’s condition.

Southern Vectis say all routes are now returning to normal.
