There’s a special kind of satisfaction in watching your character grow stronger. New abilities unlock, more content opens up, and mobs that used to one-shot you now barely pose a threat. Getting there, though, can sometimes feel like a second job.
Retail WoW makes leveling much faster than Classic, but it still takes time, especially if you have a busy schedule and a few alts waiting in the wings. Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to speed things up. Whether you’re starting fresh or catching up with friends, here are some practical tips and strategies that can help you pick up the pace without taking the fun out of the game.
Pick Up XP Bonuses
Before starting a leveling session, check which experience buffs you can activate:
- Warband Mentored leveling: Having max-level characters on your account grants additional experience to your other characters, in 5% steps up to 25%. It’s especially useful when leveling alts.
- Rested XP: Log out in an inn or capital city to build up rested experience. It doubles XP from eligible enemy kills until the pool runs out, but doesn’t boost quest turn-ins.
- War Mode: War Mode boosts outdoor experience but exposes you to enemy players. Check the active Enlisted buff to see your character’s actual bonus, which varies with faction balance.
- Turbulent Timeways: During this event, completing Timewalking dungeons grants Knowledge of the Timeways, starting at 5% extra XP and moving up to the cap of 30% with Mastery of the Timeways.
- Other event buffs: At the Darkmoon Faire, ride the carousel or roller coaster, or use a Darkmoon Top Hat, to get the 10% WHEE! bonus. You can also pick up XP buffs during seasonal events such as Midsummer Fire Festival, Hallow’s End, and Brewfest.
- Consumables and guild perks: Draught of Ten Lands provides 10% extra XP but only works through level 49. If you’re part of a guild, Guild Battle Standards can also increase experience gains to up to 15%.
Choose a Spec That Levels Efficiently
The best leveling spec isn’t necessarily the one topping raid meters; it’s the one that kills enemies quickly without leaving you constantly eating, drinking, or running back to your corpse.
Beast Mastery Hunter’s pet tanking makes it easy to handle multiple enemies without much downtime. Frost Mage offers strong crowd control, allowing you to slow and kite packs while dealing decent AoE damage. Affliction and Destruction Warlocks can lean on their voidwalker pets for protection and built-in sustain and use DoTs or AoE attacks to clear groups. Guardian Druid lets you pull almost entire zones at once with strong self-healing, great mitigation, and fast shape-shifting movement.
Optimize Your Talent Build
The right talents can drastically boost your XP per hour by focusing on three main pillars: cutting downtime, improving mobility, and increasing AoE damage.
Here are two distinct examples of how specific talent choices directly translate to faster leveling.
- Affliction Warlock: Focus on talents that help you convert kills into resources and allow you to chain-pull monsters without stopping. Soul Siphon or passive health/mana regeneration on kill ensures your bars stay full, while talents like Soul Leech provide absorb shields based on damage dealt, allowing for almost zero permanent damage and fewer breaks to recover between fights.
- Retribution Paladin: Talents that reduce the cooldowns of major burst abilities like Wake of Ashes or Avenging Wrath help you have them ready for every single quest objective. Swapping single-target talents for options that increase AoE damage or improve multi-target burst, such as Divine Toll paired with Divine Resonance, can make clearing larger groups even faster.
Regardless of your class, ensure your leveling tree also prioritizes movement-speed bonuses and on-kill procs.
Plan Your Questing Route
For efficient leveling from 10 to 80 before moving into Midnight’s level 80-90 content, it’s better to use Chromie Time. This feature lets you choose any previous expansion’s timeline and level through its quests and dungeons, scaling the content to your character.
Dragonflight is a pretty decent timeline for speed-running through 10 to 70, thanks to its streamlined quests and early access to Skyriding.
Legion, Cataclysm, and Warlords of Draenor offer good alternatives, with their compact questing areas and bonus objectives. Here’s a possible route:
- Horde: Silverpine Forest, followed by Hillsbrad Foothills.
- Alliance: Redridge Mountains, followed by Duskwood.
- Both factions can then head to Gorgrond in Draenor, combining regular quests with nearby bonus objectives.
Keep an eye out for rare mobs as you quest. They can award a useful chunk of XP, and occasionally you’ll get a worthwhile item, too.
Once you reach level 70, follow the accelerated catch-up path through The War Within to reach Midnight’s leveling range.
From level 80, your journey begins in Eversong Woods. After the introduction, you can quest through Zul’Aman, Harandar, and Arator in the order you prefer. Voidstorm is the final leveling zone, designed for higher-level characters, so we recommend fully clearing the three preceding zones and reaching at least level 86 before heading there.
For extra XP, you can also mix campaign quests with dungeons, Delves, and Renown progression.
Consider Professional Help
Sometimes, even the most efficient route can still take days of grinding. Maybe your playtime is limited, the grind has worn you down, or you’re stuck trying to reach a particular milestone. For cases like that, WoW boosting can be a great solution.
A professional service can take care of leveling, helping you reach the level cap in a matter of hours without having to spend all that time at your computer. You can also get help with other goals, including item unlocks, Mythic+, and Delves. What’s more, some services offer self-play, where you join an experienced team and play alongside skilled gamers, which allows you to learn from their strategies and get the most out of WoW’s co-op experience.
Make Every Session Count
The easiest way to improve your XP per hour is to cut down on dead time. Waiting in a dungeon queue? Work on nearby quests while you wait. Picking up objectives? Check your map and grab several that send you to the same area, so you can finish them in one trip and save tons of time on running back and forth between NPCs.
Still, don’t turn leveling into a checklist you have to rush through. The whole point of WoW is to enjoy the adventure, so just find the pace that works for you and have fun along the way. Azeroth will still be there when you’re ready for the next challenge.
