Osborne Steps in Shanklin quietly reopened last week, restoring a vital pedestrian link between the town and seafront after more than 3 years of closure.
The steps were closed in late 2022 following significant land movement and damage to the retaining wall, cutting off one of Shanklin’s most important access routes. The prolonged closure became a source of frustration for residents, businesses and visitors, with the Isle of Wight Council facing criticism over repeated delays to the scheme.
In May, Island Echo reported how the authority had been branded a ‘disgrace’ over the lengthy closure after signs appeared on the fencing surrounding the site. Just days later, the council confirmed that repair works would finally get underway.
Now, the Isle of Wight Council has formally announced that the route reopened late last week following the completion of a programme of repair and improvement works.
The project has included the reconstruction of the retaining wall, the installation of improved drainage, protective netting on the cliff face and refurbishment of the steel staircase to improve the long-term resilience and safety of the route.
The reopening restores a key connection between Shanklin town centre and the seafront, making it easier for residents and visitors to access the esplanade while also benefiting local businesses.
An Isle of Wight Council spokesperson has said:
“We’re delighted to announce that Osborne Steps in Shanklin have reopened, restoring this important link between the town and seafront for residents and visitors.
“Following their closure due to land movement and damage to the retaining wall, a programme of repair and improvement works has now been completed.
“The reopening of Osborne Steps will make it easier for people to enjoy Shanklin’s seafront, support local businesses, and reconnect an important route that is valued by the local community.”
The council has thanked residents, businesses and visitors for their patience while the essential works were carried out.
The reopening brings to an end a closure lasting more than 3 years, during which the council identified a void behind part of the retaining wall and carried out extensive investigations into the stability of the site before repairs could proceed.
Good news for once! I remember walking down these steps from the town to the beach as a kid, and thought they had gone for good. Would love to see the Appley Steps fixed too, along with the steps down to Luccombe Chine, though I appreciate that’s a big ask. So much seems to be in slow decline it’s great to see something fixed, not left to decay.
Looks a great job. I imagine a mainland firm carried out the works.
