Holy Cross Catholic Primary School in East Cowes has been rated as ‘requires improvement’ following an inspection by Ofsted.
A rigorous inspection carried out at the start of June found that the school is ‘good’ in almost all ratings, apart from the quality of education.
Ofsted inspectors found that leaders are ambitious for all pupils to achieve well and have rightly focused on improving English and mathematics, and pupils now learn well in these subjects.
It was also found that children get off to a strong start to their school life in early years and pupils live up to leaders’ high expectations for behaviour and feel safe at school too.
However, inspectors have said that teachers do not always know what to teach and assess, and pupils cannot always recall essential learning. Furthermore, it is said that pupils with special educational needs and disabilities do not experience a clearly defined curriculum in all subjects.
It follows ‘significant turbulence’ in the school’s leadership and staffing since the previous inspection in November 2021.
Interim Executive Headteacher Sharon Freeley says they although the school still has work to do, they’re not finished yet and are confident that they can make this the best school it can be.
