The Isle of Wight NHS Trust is validating its waiting lists to reduce hospital procedure and appointment wait times at St. Mary’s Hospital and seeks your help.
As waiting lists for appointments and procedures across the NHS continue to grow, the Trust is taking action to help reduce waiting times at St. Mary’s Hospital by enabling a process that allows patients to confirm whether they still require their appointment.
From Monday 23rd October to Wednesday 8th November 2023, St. Mary’s Hospital will contact patients through text message, using a brief questionnaire to confirm their need for a scheduled procedure or appointment.
Patients on specific waiting lists for over 12 weeks will receive a text message from NHS IOW, which will contain a unique 4-digit PIN. The PIN, along with their date of birth, will enable a brief questionnaire about their upcoming appointment. Those on multiple waiting lists will receive a notification for each one.
If there is no mobile telephone number on record for the patient in the hospital system, they will receive a letter by post instead.
If you are on a waiting list and do not receive contact from the hospital during this time, no action is necessary.
Completing the questionnaire will help reduce waiting lists by:
- Removing those who no longer require an appointment or procedure.
Reducing the number of people who do not attend an appointment because they no longer require treatment.
- Enabling a more efficient booking service by reducing administrative phone calls.

talk about rearranging the deckchairs on the titanic….
wasting money and time getting everyone to simply respond “yes I do want my appointment, as I wouldn’t have made it in the first place, if I didn’t want it” isn’t going to reduce waiting lists.
start on A and E – unless you have actually had an Accident, or a real Emergency, meaning life threatening, if not seen within minutes, then don’t bother turning up to A and E, as you will not be seen and simply sent away. That will reduce the demand on staff, who can then be freed up to work on non emergency waiting list patients.refuse to treat anyone, beyond emergency care who isn’t a UK citizen and tell them that further care is via private care, funded by their insurance.
See the huge amount of illegal and legal arrivals here and then try to put 2&2 together to see WHY waiting for appointments has increased since.
It is not just Coincidence but no one in authority dare say so.
I work in a and e and most patients are white people. most of them had an OD and or drunk, rarely we see black, brown or asian people in the department so I dont know where you getting your data lol
Brilliant idea, reduce the waiting list time by cutting the number of patients they see.
I am no accountant but I would be interested to know just how much the letter printing and postage will be for those not with a mobile phone and surely, this will only be effective if it is a continuous process.
I guess they are hoping that a lot of their patients on the waiting list have died or given up hope.
More time to do Tik Tok
Working for any Government funded organisation is a piece of p*ss
Plenty of pay, good pension and sick pay
AND YOU ARE UNACCOUNTABLE
Bosses do not even know they are there!
Yes indeed, waiting lists will not go down while they enjoy taking strike days off and singing, smiling and dancing. Everyone would love double-digit pay rises, but there’s no money left after the wasted spending. Throwing money at health staff does not solve the problem of huge amounts spent and wasted on excessive managers and on products being overcharged to the NHS.
I’ve been waiting since end of may to see the eye doctor! And yes I do still want to see someone before I go blind please!
They will do what they usually do, ship patients to Pompey and Southampton
Why when you go to a&e you have to wait 4/6 hours just to see someone ?? most problems could be sorted im sure in a hour or so if it was run properly..
Lack of organisation is the problem.
Because Doctors and Nurses have to take so much care ( most of which may not be required) incase they miss something minor and get their arse sued… Why do they have to ask the patient ‘ is that all right’ ? before they administer a life changing procedure/drug. Just do it and tell the patient ‘we’re doing this because if we don’t, you will die…
GP’s won’t see patients and so they flock to A&E to get help, that is the main reason your waiting times are so long. If the beacon reopened and had a couple of GP’s who could actually see people face to face those times would plummet as would the patient numbers needing beds.
What about those that just can’t be bothered to do anything ?
They understand pay day.
Bit insulted really. Just had a call to say that my long-awaited appointment in November has been cancelled as there are no available consultants. However, if I pay £150, I can keep the same appointment in the same place on the same day. Something smells very wrong!
