UPDATED: The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service are attending a property fire on Avenue Road in Shanklin this morning (Tuesday).
4 appliances from Shanklin, Sandown and Ryde – plus the aerial ladder platform and Incident Command Unit from Newport – are currently on scene as firefighters tackle the blaze.
An extension ladder has been used by firefighters wearing breathing apparatus to gain access to the first floor of the residential dwelling.
Emergency services were alerted to the incident shortly after midnight.
UPDATE @ 01:37 – It has been confirmed that 6 BA and 2 hose reels have been used to tackle the fire, which has been largely contained to the first floor of the building – said to be 2 flats.
According to the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service nobody was inside the property at the time of the fire breaking out. The British Red Cross Emergency and Fire Support unit is now on scene and providing support to those affected.
The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service are also on scene and are checking over 1 male for smoke inhalation, however no one else has been injured.
A neighbouring resident has described hearing ‘commotion’ surrounding the property at just before midnight. The cause of the incident remains unclear.
Positive Pressure Ventilation is being used to rid any smoke and crews are making up.
UPDATE @ 02:05 – Police have been called to the scene as initial investigations into the cause of the incident get underway.
Appliances are expected to start being stood down shortly. The Aerial Ladder Platform has now returned to station.
UPDATE @ 02:45 – Crews from Ryde have now been stood down from the incident and are returning to station.
2 appliances from Shanklin and Sandown remain on scene as initial investigations continue.
UPDATE @ 03:50 – The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service have now left the scene, however officers are expected to return later this morning to continue their investigations.
The fire broke out surrounding the staircase. The first floor has sustained 20% fire damage and 100% smoke damage.
