Newport struck twice in the first half to end Cowes Sports’ 3-year dominance in the competition with a 3–1 Gold Cup triumph on Friday evening (1st May).
In a fitting occasion for the Isle of Wight’s most prestigious competition, Newport and Cowes Sports produced a competitive final under the lights, with the County Town club regaining the Isle of Wight Senior (Gold) Cup for the first time since 2021–22.
The result saw Newport extend their record as the competition’s most successful side, lifting the trophy for the 47th time, while Cowes were denied a 4th successive victory.
Newport made the sharper start, and on 11 minutes a dangerous corner caused problems in the Cowes penalty area, striking the post before Ed Hatt was called into action to make a smart save from the follow-up.
Cowes responded positively, with Ryan Hughes driving forward and firing narrowly wide on 15 minutes, before Scott McFarlane turned sharply and forced a save a minute later.
However, the final turned decisively in Newport’s favour with 2 quickfire goals. Ji Nash – now boasting 41 goals in 45 appearances this season – opened the scoring on 20 minutes (1–0), before Joe Craig doubled the advantage just 6 minutes later to make it (2–0).
Cowes continued to compete well before the break, George Colson seeing a free-kick clip the roof of the net on 32 minutes, while Callum Chase’s header was well saved as they searched for a foothold in the game.
Half Time: Newport 2-0 Cowes Sports
Newport tightened their grip on the final on 55 minutes, Joe Butcher capitalising on a defensive error to extend the lead to (3–0), a moment that gave the County Town side firm control of the contest.
Yet the final still had life. Cowes refused to let the occasion drift away, building pressure and enjoying more possession as they pushed Newport back.
Finley Phillips sparked belief on 72 minutes with a driven effort from distance that was turned around the post.
That pressure paid off 2 minutes later when Charlie Marsek pulled a goal back (3–1), lifting the atmosphere and offering hope of a late comeback.
Cowes pressed with urgency, searching for a second to set up a grandstand finish, but Newport showed their experience in the closing stages, slowing the tempo and defending resolutely.
Five minutes of added time were played, but Newport remained composed to see out the victory and reclaim the Isle of Wight Senior (Gold) Cup.
