Vecta House Care Home in Newport was transformed into a chocolatier’s workshop last week (Friday) as residents enjoyed a sensory journey through the world of artisan confectionery.
The event was hosted by Kelly, owner of the local business Isle of Chocolate, who visited the home to share her passion for handmade treats and local craftsmanship.
The afternoon began with a guided tasting session where residents sampled a curated selection of homemade chocolates one by one. Participants were encouraged to identify the complex profiles of each piece, successfully spotting flavours ranging from classic mint and hazelnut to more adventurous combinations like lemon meringue, raspberry, orange, and rich caramel.
To add to the cozy atmosphere, the experience included artisan hot chocolate spoons, which residents stirred into warm milk to create a velvety afternoon treat.
Beyond the tasting, the group engaged in a chocolate-themed quiz and spent time reminiscing about their favourite childhood sweets and brands. The session also included a look at the history and science of confectionery, leading to a lively debate when residents discovered that white chocolate isn’t technically chocolate at all, as it lacks the cocoa solids or liquor found in milk and dark varieties.
