New signage has been installed across Ryde this week in a bid to tackle dog fouling.
The move is part of a wider campaign by the Isle of Wight Council’s Public Realm team to crack down on environmental offences.
The new signs are the first step in ‘Operation Clean and Safe’ – a council-led initiative supported by Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary. Officers will soon begin joint patrols to provide reassurance and act as a visible deterrent.
Operation Clean and Safe aims to address a range of issues including dog fouling, fly-tipping and littering. It also reminds dog owners of their responsibilities, including keeping dogs on leads in certain public areas and ensuring microchip information is kept up to date.
The council says the approach will combine advice and education with enforcement action where necessary. Officers will make use of existing legal powers under Public Space Protection Orders and the Environmental Protection Act 1990 to help keep public spaces clean, safe and welcoming.

That’s a well maintained building behind that chap, Encouraging people to look after the area.
Good, but the fines are no where near enough. Make it £1000.
There is such a problem in Ryde its disgusting.
I have to clean it off my shoes regularly while out walking my own dog and sometimes, I have to clean it off my own dogs paws from other people who cant be bothered and shouldn’t be allowed to own a dog
Take DNA from all dogs and find the culprit every time. Many European cities are using this scheme and I think its a great scheme.
Islandwide CCTV is needed.
Heavy fines of £1,000.00 – no excuses.
The persons who let their pets foul the pavement are
walking human excrement who don’t respect others
and shouldn’t be allowed to own pets.
All dog owners should have a dog licence like they
did years ago.
Too many numpties are allowed to own dogs.
