The oldest glass studio on the Isle of Wight has taken on a new apprentice, passing on the expertise of glassblowing to a new generation.
Managers at Alum Bay Glass, which is based at The Needles Landmark Attraction, decided it was time to teach the skills of glassblowing to the next generation to keep the art alive.
After much interest in the position, 18-year-old Jenna Hilton, who recently moved to the Island from Lincoln, was chosen to train with the Alum Bay team.
Jenna, who has already completed a BTEC in music at Lincoln College, has a real passion for art which helped staff decide she would be perfect for the job.
Naomi Sondergaard, training manager for The Needles Landmark Attraction, said:
“We’re so pleased we’ve been able to start the process of training Jenna in the art of glass making.
“We realised last year that demand for our products meant a new addition to our team was needed. Working in a glass-making studio is no run-of-the-mill job, so we had to work hard to seek out the right candidate for the role.
“I’m confident we’ve found Alum Bay Glass’ next skilled artisan in Jenna.”
Jenna said:
“I’m very happy that I was chosen to be the new apprentice glassmaker at Alum Bay. I feel like I’ve learnt so much already and am looking forward to completing my training.”
