The Environment Agency have issued a new Flood Alert for the Simeon Street Recreation Ground area of Ryde today (Saturday).
Flooding is possible for: Monktonmead Brook at Rink Road, Marymead Close, West Hill Road, Simeon Street and The Strand.
Residents in the area are still feeling the effects of the deluge earlier in the week that saw the rec and surrounding areas almost completely under water, several people have been forced from their homes as a result of the flooding.
During the torrential weather in the early hours of Wednesday morning, the flood gates at Simeon Rec were left open and it was too late when they were eventually closed.
This time around, the Environment Agency have put the flood gates in Simeon Rec in place.

This used to be marshland back in the 1880s according to the old maps, why do we think it would be any different now? And why build houses all around an area of marshland?
Council not worried about environmental consequences or people’s homes and belongings , as those houses built will generate income .
It will be the home owners and insurance companies who have to foot the bill .
No one should be able to build on known possible flood areas ,insurance could and should refuse to insure.
With this being said if no insurance possible then the houses wouldn’t sell to any right minded person and would be left to the developer/ council to sort out at a loss surely and would serve them right for the greed
A large percentage of the Island was marsh land, and still is, but greedy developers had to build on it. Now as a result a large percentage of the Island floods. Morton is a victim since houses were built on it for starters
Probably profits have something to do with it, and that is all the council and their friends the developers are concerned about. It would help if the environmental agency bothered to sedge the rivers and brooks, like the old water board used to do.
Profit comes before caring in this greedy world
Note that none of the developers ever live in these damp cess pool surrounded houses. So they don’t care.
Never be able to sell them now. As all buyers are informed of flood claims.
Literally stuck in the effluent enriched mud. No right minded person would want that risk to their children and pets
Because the powers that be don’t give a stuff, money is more important than people….Its the stinking corrupt world we live in, never mind, world war three is just around the corner….Marshall law is very very close…
The end in nigh..
Agreed at start gates should of been closed earlier but wouldn’t in the end made any difference looks like even had been shut they would of overflowed now due to volume of water, like bath tub , keep tap’s running and still damage when over flows.
Hopefully extra pump’s,drain clearing and sand bags out tonight. People have chance to move stuff out or upstairs too.
Floodgates….. I saw a dog walker, open a floodgate along the front, so they could get through… but they did not close it.. just left it open.. they should have locks on them, and locked when closed.
Anyone going to be suing for damaged property/ compensation due to the neglect of the E.A to close the flood gates, when they had plenty of warning of the potential flooding from the Met Office? Victims of the resulting flood damage should not have to claim on their own insurance.
dought it..
Dont Worry Folks
Captiva New Homes will ease the flow
Lol
It’s called shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted…
The Isle of Wight Bus Museum in Park Road was totally under water in last Wednesdays deluge. Much stock has been lost as well as electrical items…fridge, freezer, dishwasher and irreplaceable books, display cabinets, souvenirs worth thousands have gone.
Interestingly driving to Newport this morning on the corner opposite Pitts Lane where there was a flooded road on Thursday morning the drain is still bubbling and further along the main road a similar appearance wonder if lack of drain maintenance was the cause on that road and possibly others
Yes drain maintenance is non existent on the island, trouble is the water in drains is contaminated from oil etc and cost a lot of money to dispose of that’s why I think it doesn’t get done
Naaaaaaaaaaaaa don,t be daft i cleared my drain on the road out side my house knew them tossers won,t do it..
Staggering how many members of public have actively been out to flood areas to pull all the debris from the drains, and managing to completely drain all water away !
It would have to be the public. One of the first things Cameron did when they lied their way back in was bin off over half of the Environmental Agency. Isle of Wight lost most of its local staff in the first round of austerity, and it’s only ever been less and less ever since.
How did a bunch of private bankers convince us a crisis in private banking was Gordon Brown’s fault in the first place? Power of the press, eh?
Let’s not forget Michelle Mone has personally had ten times as much as was spent on those flood defences down that way. Beggars belief the state of the UK after 13 years of these bandits!
What you get when you have a government stealing all the tax money and giving it to their business mates. HS2 £10bn over budget. Only way that happens is corruption. Look up the Michelle Mone PPE scandal. Tip of the iceberg.
True enough Fred but Labour will do the same and give it to Africa or its ever growing population here. Better the rubbish we have now in power imo
So true at least the corrupt money stays here atm. Can’t be many left in the dark continent now as most seem to be lurking around in doorways here glued to a mobile in daylight hours.
Labour will bring in the rest to overpopulate and impoverish us at a more rapid pace imo
Good job they spent £5million on no more floods then……….maybe use the floating turd as a barrior even that ,most probable fail….
Why can’t people just do their jobs properly? Why is everyone so corrupt and intent on making money at the expense of decent people in this world let along the island. The money spent on that flood wall was a total waste and gave people a false sense of security. Did the environmental agency know it was useless all along!? I think a huge shake up is needed to weed out the bad people and employ decent caring people for a change. It’s disgusting
