Letter to the editor – 22nd November 2023
Dear Editor, Last week my wife and I were on holiday on the Island with our dog. I took the dog for a walk in the evening, and used my phone as a torch in the pitch darkness. In doing so I must have let my bank cards and driving licence fall out of the wallet. The next day, having discovered the loss, I retraced my steps with no success. Today, back home in Midsomer Norton, I received the cards back though the post with a note from ‘Clare’ – no surname or address given – who said she found the cards whilst walking her dog. I can only hope that she might read this letter in your columns, and receive my very best thanks for her kindness to an unknown stranger. Tony Wilds Midsomer Norton, Bath

Well it certainly wasn’t a thieving islander.
Not a surprise at all. Despite the doom and gloom that makes the headlines, you’ve only to read Ventnor (and other) social media noticeboards to be reminded what a caring and magnanimous lot we really are.
Honesty shouldn’t need to be thanked but in this day and age it’s refreshing to see it rewarded with one. Well done Clare and Tony for saying thanks. You’d be surprised how many people never say it.
It’s so warming to know goodness still exists. Clare, whomever you are, you have won the respect of many.
