Less than 12 hours after announcing that a full, 2-boat timetable would resume on Red Jet today (Tuesday), Red Funnel has had to cancel a number of crossings due to more technical issues.
Due to Red Jet 4 being taken out of service and Red Jet 6 out for refit, a revised timetable has been in operation since last week. Things were initially planned to return to normal on Friday, then Saturday and then today.
Last night Red Funnel confirmed that Red Jet 4 was back in action and would operate alongside Red Jet 7. However, a technical issue with Red Jet 4’s Port reversing bucket is causing chaos once again.
Today marks the 9th day of cancellations.
The following hi-speed Red Jet sailings have been cancelled so far this morning:

From Southampton
- 06:05
- 07:15
- 08:25
UPDATE @ 16:45 – Leanna Lakes, Operations Director at Red Funnel, said:
“I am pleased to update our passengers that we have addressed the issue with the steering system on Red Jet 4 which resulted in some unexpected delays to crossings this morning. We are now operating to normal timetables and sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused during this time.”
Shut it down, close it, tarmac it. Wonder who will come up with one of these? It’s like bingo on here at times with some people’s comments

Oh Yes… you mean it wasn’t running full so you trot out the old excuses again and again to cancel it.
Its a bridge we need here not a unreliable, extortionately priced, out of date, so called cross Solent form of transport.
As long as these ferry operators aren’t regulated, they’re not accountable for their shortcomings. The sad reality is, they can get away with running a poor service and charge what they like for it.
I dread to think what it must be like commuting on a daily basis and not knowing when you’re going to get to work or back home again. It’s bad enough trying to plan the odd day trip, only to find your plans shot to pieces at the last minute.
