An Isle of Wight animal sanctuary is preparing to welcome 5 rescued macaques later this month, in what has been described as a major milestone rescue.
Monkey Haven Primate Rescue has announced the imminent arrival of the pig-tailed macaques, who are being transferred from AAP Rescue Centre after being saved from an unlicensed private zoo that was shut down by authorities.
The group has remained together as a social family unit following their rescue and includes an adult breeding pair, their 2 offspring and an unrelated female who was previously confiscated during suspected illegal transport.
Their story highlights the complex situations many primates face, as well as the importance of collaboration between rescue organisations across Europe.
The macaques are expected to arrive towards the end of May, where they will be given a permanent home with specialist care in a safe and enriched environment tailored to their needs.
Throughout Macaque Week, Monkey Haven will be sharing the individual stories of each animal to raise awareness of primate welfare and the need for continued rescue and rehabilitation efforts.
A spokesperson, Monkey Haven Primate Rescue, has said:
“We are incredibly excited to welcome these macaques to Monkey Haven. Their journey has not been straightforward, but we are committed to giving them the safe and secure future they deserve.”
Members of the public are being encouraged to follow Monkey Haven on social media for updates and to learn more about each macaque’s story.

Let’s hope they arrive before Thursday. I would vote anyone
