An inquest into the death of Bembridge woman Gillian Burns, who went missing on the Isle of Wight back in September 2023, has concluded that she took her own life following a fall from a significant height.
In a behind-closed-doors inquest, conducted under Section 9C of the Coroners and Justice Act of 2009, Senior Coroner Caroline Sumeray concluded the inquest into the death of Gillian Burns, originally from Kingston Upon-Thames, whose body was found at the foot off Culver Cliff back in September 2023.
It was on 18th September that a major search was launched to find housekeeper Gillian, from Brooks Close in Bembridge, who had disappeared from her home address. She was last seen by her husband at 22:00 the night before.
Police, HM Coastguard and WightSAR descended on the local area and soon located Gillian’s bicycle off Peacock Hill, to the north side of Culver Down.
The search continued overnight and into the following morning, with those involved battling adverse weather conditions as they worked tirelessly to locate Gillian.
A day later, whilst HM Coastguard teams were scouring the coast between Yaverland and Whitecliff Bay, Gillian’s body was sadly discovered within the Nostrils Cave, 50 metres west of Horseshoe Bay.
Gillian died as result of multiple traumatic injuries following a fall from what was described as ‘significant’ height.
HM Senior Coroner Caroline Sumeray concluded that Gillian took her own life, ruling her death as suicide.
