The latest Ministry of Justice statistics for prisons have revealed that a total of 78 attacks against staff took place at HMP Isle of Wight in 2023. A total of 191 assaults were committed in the previous calendar year, a total of 24 of them were classed as serious.
Across the whole of England and Wales, prisons reported a total of more than 28,292 assaults,
9,847 of these were attacks on prison employees, while the rest were prisoner-on-prisoner incidents.
Wandsworth Prison in London had the highest number of prisoner-on-staff assaults.
HMP Isle of Wight also recorded 853 incidents of self harm. Nationally, last year saw an increase in incidents of self-harm among male prisoners rise 25 percent, to 852 incidents per 1,000 prisoners. A lack of support for mentally ill prisoners has been highlighted as a factor leading to the increase in incidents of self harm. Overall, HMP Isle of Wight was given a rating of 59% in the Prison Performance Table, leading to a rating of 3 out of 5.
High levels of assault, squalid conditions and staff shortages have seen droves of officers leaving the profession, including in the local prison.

And all they get is a measily poor concurrent sentence…. any sentence should be added to the end of their time- then they might think twice…
Stop all half sentences and make them do the full sentence. Add 10 years automatically on for any assaults on staff, this would soon be a real deterrent. No more free solicitors paid for by the tax payer, if you cant afford it hard luck. Let the public know that they can live and walk around in safety knowing that these idiots will actually pay a high price for crime instead of laughing at us all the time.
And these are the lovely people that Our new PM wants to let out of prison early. Good idea Labour
I would rather work outside in all weathers than be a
