Plans for a brand-new film studio here on the Island are gathering pace again, some 16 months after they were originally touted. It was in November 2022 that plans were first unveiled to build a new television and film studio on the banks of the River Medina on 16 acres of land known as Kingston Marine Park. But 18 months on, the sale of the land by the Isle of Wight Council to Medina Studios Ltd. has still not gone through. In the latest planning application, it is stated that Medina Studios – as the site would be known – would be digitally advanced and future-proofed allowing productions to base themselves on the Island as opposed to having to travel to it. The application says ‘There has never been a better time for a high-quality studio space to join the market’. Employment-wise, Medina Studios could see as many as 400+ FTE jobs in the sector will be created. Duncan Heath, David Godfrey and Neil Blewett, who all have experience in the film and TV sectors, are behind the proposals, the trio and Medina Studios has the full support of the Isle of Wight Council, the application states Anyone wishing to comment on the proposal and its contents can do by before the deadline on Monday 2nd September. Visit the council’s planning register, quoting reference 24/01137/FUL, to read the plans.

I hope they have their own boats, ours no longer work!
more precious natural riverbank habitat lost
Probably, although the statutory investigations are very clear about the need to retain habitat.
Looking at the satellite map there doesn’t seem to be much “habitat” to retain. Just some sandy scrub and a few sewage outlets.
If this goes ahead, the landscaping required may actually end up improving the habitat.
Plastic qwerty strikes again, this time actually with a sensible comment. Well done plastic.
Looks great, but will reality match the plans. Rather than riverside hotels, house’s?
At rate council do anything we can expect the plan to move to mainland, no sale, no new jobs etc
Can you translate please?
It’ll be a tough ask getting investors to fund this on the island. Transport will always be an issue and it will massively increase financial and time overheads for any production. Studios located in close proximity to London will always be preferred.
They will get the land at a discount from the Council with the promise of all the jobs to be created and the Arts Council will also hand over lots of dosh from their magic money tree. Some minor works will start on site then it will go quiet for a year before announcing that regrettably the plan is no longer viable. Ah well, there’s always Plan B of posh riverside apartments which I suspect was Plan A all along.
The artist’s impression shows a pier/pontoon, but it doesn’t appear in any of the formal drawings. How so?
For the new Island to Mainland ‘fairy tale’ ferry service….
