A man from Shalfleet who shot a wild bird with an air rifle from his back garden pleaded guilty to 2 offences at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court today (Friday).
Sunny Evelight, 25, of Fleet Way pleaded guilty to 1 count of firing an air weapon beyond premises and 1 count of injuring a non-schedule 1 wild bird when he appeared in front of Magistrates shortly before lunchtime.
Liz Miller, prosecuting, told the court that on 30th June this year, Evelight shot a black-headed gull that was in his back garden with a meteor air rifle – injuring the bird.
The gull – that had suffered severe wing damage – was able to escape the 25-year-old’s garden before being found by children nearby. Noticing that the bird was severely injured, 1 of the children notified their parents who then took the bird to the Green, Roberts and Butler veterinary practice in Newport.
Despite the best efforts of those at the practice, the bird could not be saved and was put down.
Defending Evelight, Jim Osborne said that his client deeply regretted his decision that day and that he had serious mental health issues.
Evelight has previous criminal convictions for offences committed in 2021 and in 2017.
The case has been adjourned for a pre-sentence report to be compiled with the 25-year-old bailed to appear at the same court on 23rd September.

It’s an annoying Gull??
Yet ANOTHER example of a lovely old Island village now ruined, not for a while, but forever, as social, and affordable housing brings those who don’t belong into areas where they should have never been allowed to live.
A flat at Oakfield would be more suitable imo
Cruel, not country nasty people. Mental enough to claim all the benefits of such, yet never mental enough to be locked up where they would soon sing a different tune after a few years in an asylum.
You are a pretentious prat
But so right, so can only ‘insult’ in a vain attempt to score points against a very true and well put point of view.
Hope you’re not taking about me ,I have never been on the dole,I have never claimed any benefits except Child Benefit,I am fully paid up with my National insurance I’m a home owner and I’ve always had a legitimate job!
Well said, some people are so far up themselves it’s unbelievable
Pomander I so agree with you. Disgusting excuse for a human being. These types are ruining everywhere, I agree with your every word and couldn’t put it better. Very well said.X
All of theses ‘annoying’ Gulls are protected by the way
Yes they are!
Should be shot …himself!!!!!!
Total idiot pillock etc…
Anyone who treats bird’s or animal’s badly are a total waste of space……
Hope that no-one lets you near gun of any sort, you are clearly not fit to be entrusted with one!
Pretty well everyone who has a gun shouldn’t be trusted with one. Horrible people.
100% agree, I hope he gets punished x
Well said Miss Sensible , totally agree with you he should be shot
Hope that no-one lets you near gun of any sort, you are clearly not fit to be entrusted with one!
Wanker
When will the police and press stop calling an airgun or bb gun a “firearm”? There is no fire involved in propelling the projectile out of the barrel, which is where the expression “firearm ” comes from. – I guess it makes any story that bit more dramatic sounding though!
Any airgun which is fired on property or in this case over property and land which does not belong to the owner of the gun if the owners permission has not be given to shoot there, then becomes classed as a firearm.
Sure it only uses compressed air to fire a piece of lead, but the Meteor airgun is weak and was never meant for shooting anything but targets, but as here can easily wound any living creatures.
He does need locking up. Likely benefit kept by ‘using’ mental illness to cover a lazy, horrid personality issue. A year in an asylum would cure the claim I am certain.
Being an avid (responsible) shooter myself, I am fully aware of the law regarding where you can and cannot shoot, thankyou. – my point was simply that incidents such as this are always made to sound more dramatic by the press and the authorities.
If the defendant had previous convictions , mental health issues and has misused a gun why hasn’t he become a “prohibited person” as defined by the Firearms Act ? Such orders apply not just to the heavily controlled S1 Rifles and S 2 Shotguns but the less tightly controlled air guns and imitation guns as well.
serious mental health issues. Sounds like the ideal person to have a gun you watch he will be back on here in 2 years time having shot someone
Get out of jail free card played again ….mental issues
Maybe convert the old camp hill prison into a “mental health issues prison “…be full in days
IF all those claiming mental health were put in an asylum for a year, I bet we would see the number of such claims fall through the floor.
Mental health is harder to prove than back issues, hence all the ‘estates and social housing’ are changing tactics to abuse this now. It is the new ‘back problems’ get out of work but claim care payments for themselves and a crooked relative as well.
Hence adult social care costs keep our c. tax high, but THEY don’t pay any so could not care less. NEVER that mental, always on the right side of payments.
