A 81-year-old man with a painful hip injury was rescued from an offshore pontoon by Cowes RNLI this afternoon (Saturday).
The pensioner slipped whilst transferring from a boat onto the fuel depot pontoon on the River Medina, south of the Floating Bridge slipway.
Launching just after 17:00, the lifeboat was soon joined on scene by a Cowes Harbour launch.
Eventually, after much pain relief, the casualty was stretchered onto the Harbour Launch and was landed at Shepards Marina, where Bembridge Coastguard Rescue Team and the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service were waiting.
The male was then transferred into the awaiting ambulance and taken to St Mary’s Hospital, Newport.
The incident was brought to a close by 18:50.

Well done to all involved and I hope the gentleman had a comfortable night.
It is easy to miss your footing on those pontoons, but that isa small price to pay for sailing.
Wouldn’t say that was “offshore” it’s in the river.
But hopefully the fella recovers well.
