An elderly man is being treated in hospital for serious injuries sustained when he was hit by a car in Carisbrooke during the early hours of this morning (Sunday).
Emergency services were alerted to the incident at just before 00:45 following reports of a collision between a vehicle and a pedestrian on Carisbrooke High Street.
The pedestrian, a man in his 70s, suffered serious but not life-threatening or life-changing injuries. He was taken to St Mary’s Hospital, where he remains.
The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance was scrambled to the Island but was not required to airlift the casualty to a mainland hospital.
Carisbrooke High Street was closed in both directions for a time and a hard road closure was requested, but by 02:00 it was determined the pedestrian’s injuries were not as serious as first feared and the road was reopened.
Hampshire Constabulary says that no arrests have been made, but enquiries remain ongoing. It has been confirmed that the vehicle stopped at the scene.

Yet another bad driver…… Eye tests are not too expensive, as seems the car driver needs theirs checked. Diving cautiously though build up areas, especially at night is good practice.
It must’ve been a horrible incident for you to have witnessed
Yes blame the driver. Pedestrians never walk around at night all dressed in black with their back to the oncoming traffic. Carisbrooke high street isn’t as well lit as you may think. Only a few days ago I had a moron step out of his front door directly on to that very road without looking, causing me to have to swerve into the oncoming traffic to miss him. It’s the same with the idiot Taxi drivers parked on the rank opposite TK Max who insist on standing in the middle of the road talking to their fellow drivers whilst there is a perfectly good pavement to stand on. Usually all dressed in black as well.
How do you know it was the drivers fault, were you there and saw exactly what happened?
Well here’s hoping your driving is better than your grammar and spelling. What you clearly don’t grasp, is that it tells the rest of us here all we need to know about you!
lol, you have no idea what happened and having spoken to someone at the scene, you couldn’t be more wrong. anything just to comment I suppose.
Get a life.
Put brain in gear before putting mouth in overdrive comes to mind here.
You do like making assumptions on people without first knowing the facts don’t you.
The driving test is far too easy these days…
As the the driving Examiner is only alongside you once then once the test is over the arrogant then drive with attitude from then onwards
So not the test that’s the issue at all
Anyone can fake responsibility for half an hour
It’s harder then the old days don’t blame people if you don’t know the facts
by the old days you mean before power steering, before parking warning sensors, when wing mirrors were small, when bonnets were long, and when all cars had a choke! if you’ve never experienced a choke you haven’t lived!
In the old days when there weren’t written examinations and the actual test was far less rigorous.
Most of you old farts wouldn’t be capable of passing the current driving test.
Who said this was driver error? The man could of fallen off the kerb, walked out in front of the car. People way to quick to judge on here. This could actually be what’s know as a accident
Where there is blame, there is a claim. No such thing as an accident anymore.
Have you thought that the person could have stumbled on the pavement and fell in the road into the path of the car
Lets hope the man is ok and pulls through, yet more shameful idiotic driving on this joke of an island
Was you there then it might not be the drivers fault
Were you there you mean
You only have to read the idiots comments on here to know the real reasons there are so many incidents on our island roads, we all know “Most” drivers are idiots on the Isle of Wight…
Seems unusual for someone in their 70s to be out that late, however, not much go on to form a conclusion..
As usual – total lack of any facts but that doesn’t stop the usual Indigenous IOW born and bread mouth breathing low IQ incontinent Tena wearing victim blamers rushing in.
Quarter to one in the morning !!
“Born and BREAD” !!!!
I love it!
“I was born in a Hovis Sliced”!
Why was the old person allowed out so late anyway ?’
Although island drivers are generally useless, in Ventnor there have been plenty of times I have nearly hit idiots during this ridiculously long Fringe ‘excuse to get drunk’ festival. Glad it’s over.
