Major maintenance work to Medina Bridge in Newport – the dual carriageway – has been postponed until next year, Island Roads has confirmed.
The work to replace 16 bearings on what is the Island’s longest and most well-used structure was initially scheduled to begin in September, as reported by Island Echo, but has now been pushed back to September 2026.
This decision allows Island Roads to provide solutions to a series of complex technical challenges encountered during the design phase. Work on the 6-month project cannot begin after September because of the need to avoid the Summer season and events such as the Isle of Wight Festival.
The bearing replacement project is a proactive measure designed to enhance the bridges longevity so the rescheduling does not compromise the structural integrity of the bridge which remains safe for use.

Well done island echo for using the verb “postponed” within the article, which is more understandable than “pushed back”. “Pushed back” conjures up something in the past and not the future, unless your going back to the future of course 🙂
Let me offer anther word to use as well, “delayed”.
”Pushed back” might seem trendy or “contemporary” but it’s confusing which way it is going to go.
To finish off, don’t let Island roads anywhere near that bridge to “repair” it,
So Island Roads were about to close a bridge and start repairs that haven’t been designed or costed yet? Could explain why so many projects over run and go over budget?
Have you seen the rate of pay these numpties get paid,
not to mention overtime rates.
It’s no wonder works go over budget.
Sad..
