A double decker bus has overturned and come to rest on its side in a field at Brading this morning (Thursday).
A major emergency response is ongoing at Marshcombe Shute following the road traffic collision, which occurred at around 07:50.
It’s understood a Southern Vectis bus travelling towards Sandown from Ryde – thought to be diverting around the roadworks at New Road – is involved.
Police, firefighters from several Island stations and paramedics are all in attendance.
UPDATE @ 08:45 – Island Echo can confirm that the driver and 3 passengers were on board the bus at the time of the crash, though their injury status is currently unknown.
The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service has a Rapid Response Paramedic, Silver Commander and Critical Care Paramedic on scene, such is the severity of the incident.
Firefighters have used stabilisers to shore up the bus and prevent it from moving any further, whilst the whole situation is assessed.
HM Coastguard has been requested to assist with the emergency response, with a team from Bembridge and a Senior Coastal Operations Officer on scene.
Motorists are advised to avoid the area completely, with all traffic being diverted via Yaverland until further notice.
UPDATE @ 08:54 – Southern Vectis has issued a statement in response to this morning’s incident.
Richard Tyldsley, Southern Vectis’ general manager, has said:
“One of our buses has been involved in an incident this morning at Marshcombe Shute.
“There were three passengers on-board at the time, and we are awaiting an update on any injuries to them or to our driver. Emergency services are at the scene.
“The circumstances behind this incident are currently unclear, and we are working with police as they begin their investigation. Our focus, right now, is on the wellbeing of the driver and passengers on-board.”
UPDATE @ 09:15 – Island Roads are currently marshalling traffic on the roads around the crash site in a bid to alleviate heavy congestion.
With New Road closed and Morton Common also closed due to flooding, Yaverland Road is very busy.
UPDATE @ 09:25 – Emergency crews are beginning to stand down from the incident.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service has said that crews from Ryde, Sandown and Newport responded to the incident.
Though it has been confirmed that a driver and 3 passengers were involved in the incident, there is still no update on the extent of their injuries – but they are not thought to be life-threatening.
Marshcombe Shute is expected to re-open imminently.
UPDATE @ 09:40 – Marshcombe Shute has re-opened in both directions; however, Island Echo understands that the road will close again this afternoon to allow for a recovery operation, led by Stag Lane Motors.
From the debris at the scene, it is evident that the bus was travelling from the Bembridge direction towards Yarbridge when the nearside left the edge of the carriageway, with the bus then pulled into the embankment – ultimately leading to the high-sided vehicle rolling onto its side.

S..t I really hope all involved are OK
This is what happens… fatigued drivers due to ridiculous diversions, road closures absolutely everywhere. It’s surprising that nothing like this has happened sooner… clearly spooked by something large coming up the hill so they’ve pulled in and tipped off the road due to the soft verge. Completely unsuitable diversion for large vehicles. Vectis won’t see it that way though, I wish the driver all the best in their future job search
most companies blame the drivers even if it’s not their fault
The driver just needs to take a picture of the dip
where the bus fell.
You’re making a huge assumption as to the cause of the incident, with, I suspect, absolutely no facts in front of you. Why would you do that?
And you got there before anyone else, worked out what had happened, took statements from all involved, rushed home and put you expert opinion online for all to see?
Maybe he knows a little bit more about this incident Isla?
But i do hate people that are so easy to judge and by judging a person by that then David should really just shut the f**k up.
%
Well said Sir.
There was mud on the road in that area yesterday morning with part of the bank missing. Where a vehicle had nearly left the road.
You are 110% correct.
Barriers should have been placed along this Road
months ago highlighting this issue.
So you know, do you? Or an armchair detective? Why not let the experts decide what happened!
Meanwhile, hope all on board are ok.
I hope the driver and passengers are safe and well.this is what happens when large vehicles are driving on roads that are not fit for purpose this could have been far worse than it is. Clearly not the drivers fault he was only doing his job. With all the rain that we’ve had has made the road infrastructure bad. With all the road closures flooding and island roads closing just about every road into Ryde etc I expect this won’t be the last time that we have accidents on our shite roads. I do hope that the driver keeps his job and if he gets sacked for this then the whole of southern vectis drivers should strike until he or she is reinstated.
Not sure why is is “clearly” what happened. Unless you were there, how can you possibly know? Better to wait until there is some evidence before shouting the odds
Dangerous roads are the problem.
I noticed that dangerous dip months ago driving
along this road, shame the Highways person who is paid
to notice such dangerous dips didn’t.
Can’t park there mate
When I said victims bus can’t be trusted, I have witnessed how rude and reckless the drivers are, I wonder weather they get more than 2weeks training
I have witnessed the rude and reckless drivers ,am not shocked about vectis buses. Do they even have more than 2 weeks training huh
I use the excellent bus route (no. 9) a lot and I am always impressed and grateful for how courteous, friendly and helpful the drivers are, in spite of all the current difficulties.
And all this is free for pensioners. How fortunate we are!
Good luck with that
I can assure you that all drivers have intense driver training and then have an even stricter DVLA TEST with an DVLA Examiner. We don’t know what happened at this stage and speculation is only going to make things worse
I have had bad experiences with speeding vectis, its about time the karma tells the truth
I was driving along a road today and a Bus
came across the white centre lines, the driver was
wearing glasses, so going to Specsavers won’t solve
anything.
Some do go to fast and the buses are too big for some
routes.
I have always found the drivers to be great helpful, friendly and always felt safe in there hands but I have always got on and greeted the driver with a hello, a smile and a thank you when I got off, maybe that is why they treat me in the same way.
I don’t see my white teeth for grimacing
Sounds a bit different from the mainland drivers. They can be miserable, unhelpful and some times bloody dangerous. About 90% of them smell like an old pub ash tray.
Hardly surprising ..they have to put up with judgmental people like you who haven’t the first idea of the long hours, diversions, risks and frustrations of their jobs.
See Rosalind. I agree ..am 99% impressed by SV drivers’ endless patience, good humour & politeness.
Would YOU like to be behind the wheel? In twilight, on a wet, muddy, narrow road with no street lighting? Perhaps you need to think seriously about the reality and facts before putting finger to keyboard.
I stopped using vectis buses 20 years ago and I am in the comfort of my own carI still have to judge without any fear
They are too expensive, people don’t want to
pay the fares.
I have a pass but still prefer to use my own vehicle
more convenient.
Wait for all the negative remarks and comments about “Island” drivers.
Didn’t take long!
To many diversions at any one time going on ,the roads that are the diversion routes are totally unsuitable and the inevitable keeps happening
who ever carried out the risk assessments for all these diversions has got something to answer for as is causing a health and safety issue which has become evident on many occasions recently
I didn’t think risk assessments happen on the island.
There are so many trip hazards etc around the island
The island is falling apart. I admit the weather does not help.
Isn’t it time Southern Vectis ditched their double-decker buses? IOW roads are too narrow to accommodate them & their additional weight contributes to the need for constant road repairs & onto diversions that are evidently unsuitable routes, for lots of reasons.
Really?
Spot on, many times when driving past Yaverland church
Double decker buses travelling in both directions bring
the road to a standstill, the same happens near the Church on the
bend in Nettlestone.
Many of the islands roads are not suitable for Double Decker
buses.
Even if the buses were single deck the width would still be the same
%
Get narrower buses then.
HSE should be involved in all these road works and road closures accidents.
Along this road there are many dips near the edge
and hardly any vehicle gives way near the bridge,
also they cross over to the other side of the road
when driving over the bridge, the same happens to the
bridge in Shanklin and the one before you get to Brading.
Poor, poor people
“Island Roads are currently marshalling traffic on the roads around the crash site in a bid to alleviate congestion.” WHAAAT?
It is Island Roads who are CAUSING the congestion and the RTAs, so why are they getting paid for acting traffic cops?
Instead of Councillors like Dore pissing about indoctrinating our kids about “Climate Change” and Ward and Blake attending fundraisers for Island Community Energy, why are they not coming down hard on these road cowboys, who seem to be doing everything they can to make our lives a misery.
The “repair” that was carried out last week at junction of St. Boniface Road and Lesson Road in Ventnor is now collapsing and Denmark Road in Cowes is a joke!
Come May 7th the navel gazing of these Councillors and others will be punished.
Just DO YOUR JOB!
I feel much safer in the knowledge that island roads involved..Thank you island road for your dedicated service.
You been drinking
Na ill do that later with my meal .
I bet if you farted and followed through you’d blame it on the council. What a small petty narrow minded individual you are. Wheres your concern for the bus driver and passengers? Thankgod its half term and no school children on board.
Was taking the piss out of island roads not the rescue services……….
“I bet if you farted and followed through” that’s the second time that you have used that phrase to post to one of my comments. Not related to that arsewipe sunshine are you? And “god” has nothing to do with it. It’s the IR cowboys that are causing all the problems and it goes without saying that I am concerned for the driver. Still never mind, you have farted your fart and it was noted.
Island roads are use to watching, usually you see
1 operative working and 7 or 8 watching.
That must have been very scary for the driver and passenger. I hope they are ok
The wheels on this bus are not going round and round
I hope all are ok. Diversions should be looked at more closely however so all vechicals have safer routes. I pray that the driver and passengers are not traumatised in any way because of this.
Must of been going slow perfect parking
Cannot belive there was more than two customers on thier buses
Bit of compo coming there way
I am surprised they still run the large buses to the old battery
from The Needles.
Is there no safety on the island.
On such routes run single decker buses, much safer.
Thankfully there wasn’t many persons on the bus,
more proof Double Decker buses are not required on many
routes.
A few months ago I was driving from Yaverland to Tesco
one evening.
It was dark and very wet and just as I was approaching the pub
nr the traffic lights near the bridge a dark black car with what looked
like numpties driving shot right past me from nowhere travelling
at the speed of light and went through the red lights up to
Bullies hill.
They were going so fast how I didn’t end up in a ditch that
evening I don’t know.
I thank God.
It was an old BMW it was going so fast I couldn’t read the registration
number.
It was an old BMW though.
Road safety on the island is shocking.
I have even seen buses drive fast at times and they cross over
the white lines many times.
Many of the roads on the island are too narrow for large vehicles.
Its off on one again telling tales of woe. Can’t help it though being that high on a pedestal must be disorientating. Yawn.
Another Numpty who doesn’t like to hear the truth
Bless
I agree with you %…I will never touch vectis buses with a barge pole
Thank you Vickyd, me neither.
You’re all a bunch of saddos trying to prove a point being sad keyboard warriors. Time you got a life rather than having to think you need to input on every story on the island. Theres a ferry roughly every half hour, why do you catch it and moan elsewhere. Just absolutely cretinous sad behaviour.
[…] MAJOR RESPONSE AS DOUBLE DECKER WITH 4 PEOPLE ONBOARD OVERTURNS […]
I hope the people on the bus are ok? Problem is there’s no seat belts on buses but in cars? It must of been really scary. X
Those two sticks pretending to hold the bus in position aren’t doing a lot… The bus is going nowhere….
More bad driving on the Iow
HM Coastguard has been requested to assist with the emergency response, with a team from Bembridge and a Senior Coastal Operations Officer on scene..I know we’ve had a lot of rain lately but the coast guard ? really? what a high tide coming?
And they keep waffling on about leave your car at home
and travel by bus, no thank you.
Again I agree with you %
Thank you again Vickyd
Such routes are not designed for double decker buses.
Look at the small railway bridge near the pub,
cars cannot drive across without driving on the
wrong side of the road.
I remember the days when it was a great life on the buses
Wouldn’t have happened in Inspector Blake’s days.
Gawd!
So that’s what the underside of a bus looks like. One off the bucket list there.
