Local Lib Dem councillors Nick Stuart and Michael Lilley have announced they will be seeking nomination for the Parliamentary Constituencies of West and East Wight when the next General Election occurs.
Nick Stuart, who was the only Approved Lib Dem parliamentary candidate on the Island from 2019 to 2023, has welcomed the emergence of other candidates and liberal-minded people to join the party and represent the Island completely as the Liberal Democrats have done before through Steve Ross and Peter Brand.
With a background in science and innovation in the Civil Service, teaching and small businesses, Nick is working to support ward and Island residents in housing, environment, cost of living and employment issues.
Following on from his overwhelming victory as Councillor for Brighstone, Calbourne & Shalfleet in November 2022 – as previously reported by Island Echo – and the massive victory of Sarah Redrup in Wootton on 24th August this year, the Liberal Democrats say they have proved their capability on the Island and say that they are the only party that can challenge the Conservative government.
Michael Lilley, as an experienced Isle of Wight Councillor and recent Mayor of Ryde, has championed local people in their day-to-day struggles, as well as challenging ‘unsuitable’ large-scale developments and supporting the NHS and charity sector in the crisis areas of mental health, dental and general medicine.
Encouraging the carnivals and events that make Ryde one of the most vibrant towns on the Island, Michael has worked tirelessly to support the people and businesses of Ryde.
With an agenda of fairness and equity, he joined the Liberal Democrat Council group earlier this year. He has swapped political alliances multiple times in recent years.
It is unknown when the next General Election will take place, but it must be before January 2025.
Bob Seely and Joe Robertson are to stand for the Conservatives, with Vix Lowthion and Cameron Palin hoping to secure votes for the Greens.
Maybe it’s time to the smirking and get working….

However in the case of the CONservative, the last 10 years of lies, lies and more lies, have proven tha t anything would be better than them…

Helen, the answer is no. All my working life I was not involved in politics but a Lib Dem supporter and voter. I have always been political centre/left and open about this. When I retired I did join the Greens as I was impressed with them in 2015 and when asked by local residents to stand in the area I live in a by-election in 2016 for Ryde Town Council I stood as a Green. I subsequently was elected to IW Council as a Green. I moved to become an independent after consulting my residents due the way the party treated a colleague of mine. I was voted back in 2021 with one of the largest majorities on the Island. I stood under no label other than my name for IW Council. As a Lib Dem at age 66 I promise politically I am going nowhere else.
