An Arreton man who crashed into a stationary vehicle after he consumed alcohol at a local pub has been banned from the roads for 28 months.
Paul Smith, 67, of Hopkins Walk in Arreton, admitted drink driving and assault by beating when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court earlier this week (18th March).
Giles Fletcher, Crown Prosecutor, told the court that on 4th November 2024, on Cherrywood View in Arreton, Smith drove into the rear of a stationary vehicle and made no attempts to stop.
A short while later, the owner of the stationary vehicle went to find Smith who simply told him to ‘f**k off’.
The court heard how Smith then got back into his vehicle and pushed the victim twice into the bonnet of his car before then reversing into the stationary vehicle once again. Thankfully, no injuries were sustained.
Police were called to the scene and a breath test was conducted in which a reading of 116 was returned – well above the legal limit of 35.
Defending Smith, Oscar Vincent told the court that at the time of the incident, Smith had just come to the end of long-term relationship and that he had been drinking in a local pub before the crash.
After lengthy deliberations, Magistrates handed Smith a 12-month community order with a 150-hour unpaid work order attached.
Smith was also banned from driving for 28 months and ordered to pay costs of £85 and a £114 surcharge fee.
67 years of age and still an uneducated Numpty!
Drink driving is Wrong
There is “”NO”” excuse for drink driving.
I would bang them up for at least 5 years,
bread and water only
THEY WON’T DRINK DRIVE AGAIN!!
And are you going to pay for his incarceration? Do you have any idea how much it costs to keep a prisoner behind bars (and the cost of feeding them is minimal).
