This is your weekly round-up of some of the latest court cases heard at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court.

Monday 31st October – Friday 4th November 2022
• Matthew Beale, 44, of Princes Way, Shanklin pleaded guilty to drug driving (cannabis) and possession of a Class B drug (cannabis). He was banned from driving for 16 months, fined £250 and ordered to pay £85 costs with a £100 surcharge.
• Ashley Bedford, 30, of Albert Street, Newport pleaded guilty to drug driving (cannabis). He was banned from driving for 12 months, fined £120 and ordered to pay £85 costs with a £48 surcharge.
• Joe Male, 23, of Sandown Road, Sandown pleaded guilty to drug driving (ketamine). He was banned from driving for 12 months, fined £300 and ordered to pay £85 costs with a £120 surcharge.
• Damon Wilkins, 24, formally of Broadway, Sandown but now of Hook Lane, Warsash in Southampton, pleaded guilty to X charges of criminal damage, 1x burglary other than dwelling with intent to commit damage, 1x common assault of an emergency worker and 1x drunk and disorderly in a public place. He was made subject to a 18-month community order with 25 rehabilitation days and a 120 day alcohol abstinence requirement. He was ordered to pay £150 compensation.
• Josef Wilkins, 22, of Pellhurst Road, Ryde pleaded guilty to 1x burglary other than dwelling with intent to steal, 1x burglary other than dwelling – theft and 2x criminal damage. He was handed a 6-month prison sentence and was ordered to pay £150 compensation.
• Ian Parkin, 54, of Longmead Road, Ryde pleaded guilty to failing to provide a specimen for analysis and possession of a Class B drug (cannabis). He was banned from driving for 22 months, fined £320 and ordered to pay £85 costs with a £34 surcharge.
• Marcus Dominey, 37, of Crossway, Bembridge pleaded guilty to criminal damage and possession of an offensive weapon in a public place (metal pole). He was made subject to an 18-month community order with 30 rehabilitation days. He was fined £40 and ordered to pay £85 costs with a £114 surcharge.
Warrants for arrest issued
These individuals failed to appear in court on the specified date. A warrant was issued for their arrest. This list will not be updated as to whether the warrant has been satisfied.
• Thomas Kerr, 50, of Station Road, Brading for possession of a Class A drug (heroin) and possession of a Class B drug (cannabis).
• Benjamin Fitzpatrick, 34, of Woodbine Close, Newport for criminal damage and using threatening / abusive words / behaviour likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress.

More drug driving, more pathetic fines, no deterrent whatsoever!
Punishment and fines will never stop people from offending. If it did, the Law Courts would be empty, as most recidivists are repeat offenders with personality disorders. In-depth studies of offenders who persistently re-offend show they result from a complex of personality disorders and disturbed social backgrounds. The solution is more to do with established therapeutic programs whilst inside prison than simply a desire for punishment which is little more than revenge.
