Emergency services are rushing to the aftermath of a crash after a BMW failed to stop for police in Ryde this morning (Friday).
Around 7 police units, the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service and the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service are responding to Swanmore Road where a white BMW has collided with a roadside tree before rolling and coming to rest on its roof.
Nearby residents have told Island Echo that at around 00:35 a continuation of sirens from multiple directions were being heard in the vicinity of Ryde – which, given the time of night, is uncommon. That came just after those living nearby to the crash were awoken to ‘bangs that sounded like gunshots’.
A number of readers have said they saw the BMW being chased by police vehicles prior to the collision.
No one is trapped inside the car but 1 fire appliance from Ryde has been called in the interests of scene safety.
Swanmore Road has been closed between Ratcliffe Avenue and Ashey Road in both directions.
UPDATE @ 01:30 – At the crash scene, windscreen wipers can be heard squeaking as they are stuck on following the rollover. The airbags have also been deployed.
Meanwhile, Police have been seen depositing items from the car and the surrounding area into evidence bags.
UPDATE @ 01:53 – It’s understood that 1 occupant of the vehicle has been detained by officers, with another being treated by paramedics for injuries sustained during the incident.
Paramedic crews including a paramedic officer have now stood down from the incident, as has the fire appliance from Ryde. Several police units have also left the scene, with the remaining units now assisting in the cleanup operation until such a time that the vehicle can be recovered.
Eyewitness reports suggest that the 2 male occupants of the vehicle attempted to flee the scene before being caught by officers on foot. 1 man is said to have been ‘aggressive’ and ‘abusive’ towards the officers detaining him.
It is not thought that any serious or life-threatening injuries have been sustained.
The road remains closed between its junctions with Ratcliffe Avenue and Ashey Road but it expected to re-open shortly.
The exact circumstances surrounding the events leading up to the incident remain unknown, but Island Echo has approached Hampshire Constabulary for a statement.

BMW and aggressive and abusive go together anyway…. drugs I expect. At least no one important got hurt. Don’t care about the driver and passenger at all.
Consequences must follow. 5 years hard labour and a lifetime driving ban should be the starting point for sentencing.
I agree but they don’t seem to take any notice of a driving ban they still carry on driving anyway! They don’t care less!

So long as no police or innocent people were hurt then I don’t think many of us will be too bothered about the outcome and the fate of the two people in the vehicle.

It is precisely the lack of harsher sentencing that is causing the crime rate to rise, and it will only get worse. Why were my comments removed? They were there last night. I’d walked up the road just before and heard that bang. Those scum could have gone into an innocent person and were endangering people’s lives. As it is they’ve caused the destruction of an innocent tree. It’s a shame they hadn’t destroyed themselves in the process.

And people saying about one person being aggressive well it was me as I was in shock and getting dragged around by the police wen I was in big accident … i want getting away I was trying to move away from the car as I was worried… I WAS HURTING … I was the passenger and kno drugs was in my system
