A 50-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of multiple offences following an incident in Sandown earlier this evening (Friday), which led to a large knife being recovered by Police.
Officers responded to the Avenue Road and Fort Street area of Sandown shortly before 16:55.
It’s in this area of the town that a male, who is known to Police, was arrested on suspicion of affray, assault and possession of an offensive weapon.
Island Echo is told that an individual carrying a knife was spotted in a shop and the alarm was quickly raised.
A local woman is reported to have been assaulted nearby.
A number of serious incidents have occurred in the Avenue Road area in recent months, ranging from 2 Armed Police deployments to serious assaults and a range of lesser offences.

What on earth is going on in this area lately! The man is known to Police so is it the same person involved from the other week? Needs actionbtaking before someone is seriously or fatally injured.
Sadly the Island is becoming a rough place.
and they to open more hostels there
I live in sandown and I have never known it this bad, the people involved are not locals, where are these scum bags coming from? I do occasionally engage in conversation with them(undercover) and they have all got there own story’s,never good ones and most is down to drug abuse and mental health and obviously alcohol problems,I do feel sorry for the majority of em, but there are a few who are very dangerous, and are just waiting to get locked up again,I think that they see sandown as a bit of a holiday, sad but true,
I was driving past the Heights a few days ago in the afternoon and I noticed 5 young guys walking along the road.
All looked drunk and had bottles of booze in their hands.
A shocking state of affairs.
Bring back Bobbies on the beat.
People in this state should not be roaming the streets.
