3 people have been arrested after a knife, baseball bat and a metal wrench were found inside a car that failed to stop at the scene of a crash in Lake last night (Thursday).
Police were called at 20:30 to reports of a single vehicle collision at Morrison’s petrol station in Lake.
The vehicle, a blue BMW 1-series, then left the scene.
Just a short time later, the car was stopped by officers along New Road in Brading.
Shockingly, officers searching the vehicle discovered a knife, a baseball bat and a metal wrench – items deemed to be offensive weapons.
All occupants of the vehicle – a man in his 50s, a man in his 20s and a woman in her 20s – were arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon in a public place.
The woman was then also arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and a racially aggravated public order offence after she kicked off post-arrest.
All 3 people remain in custody at this time.
UPDATE – 51-year-old Matthew Lewendon, of Fort Street in Sandown, has been charged with possession of an offensive weapon in a public place – namely a black handled knife – and has been remanded to appear at Isle of Wight Magistrates’ Court on 30th September.
The woman in her 20s has been released under investigation for the racially aggravated public order offence.
No other charges have been brought at this time.
UPDATE – Lewendon has been remanded in custody to appear at the Isle of Wight Crown Court for a plea and trial preparation hearing on 2nd November 2022.

People complain about second home owners – possibly rightly – but surely the biggest worry is the influx of these low-lifes from the mainland. And yet the Council is encouraging them to come here. Why, just why?
It is 2022. Don’t be so narrow minded to believe thd island is squeaky clean and crime free. Island Echo, actually publicise true events. Where the local paper you buy on all the ferries did not. Mobile phones and The internet have shown the island as it really is. Plenty of the people you see arrested are actually born here.
Always have been. Either you did not grow up here or you’re living in a dream word. Island has always had it’s low lives. Just that it’s reported more now. 100 years ago most of the pubs on the south coast were smuggling dens.

I presume the knife was for making sandwiches at the baseball game they had attended and the wrench was from the drivers work related tool box.

Well the wrench and knife could easy be for some sort of job or car repair. I’m struggling with the bat though, was there a ball as well?
