VIDEO: The Island’s first Isle of Wight Day was officially launched at a ceremony held in the Council Chamber at County Hall, Newport yesterday (Tuesday).
The Chamber was decked out in the day’s celebratory bunting when it was announced by the Lord Lieutenant, the High Sheriff, the Leader of the Council and the Chief Executive of the IOW Chamber of Commerce that the Island’s first Isle of Wight Day will be held this year on Saturday 24th September – an idea developed around 6 months ago by the Island’s new High Sheriff, Robin Courage.
Schools, individuals, businesses and clubs are all being encouraged to plan events for the big day. A bunting theme has been created for the day and it is hoped that every town, village, place of work and home will be decked out with bunting for the first of an annual day of celebration for the Island.

Robin Courage MBE said:
“I am passionate about this Island and am very aware of its wonderful community of talented and disparate souls. Like Red Nose Day, or Children in Need, Isle of Wight Day provides
us all with an opportunity to come together on one day to celebrate all that is great about this special place and to support local causes”
Jonathan Bacon, the Leader of the Isle of Wight Council, said:
“Isle of Wight Day gives an opportunity for all that is great about this Island to be cherished and celebrated. It will be in the calendar for many years to come. I hope that it will really instill itself in the culture of the place”.
Kevin Smith, the Chief Executive of the IOW Chamber of Commerce said:
“Isle of Wight Day provides an opportunity for our 5,000 Island businesses and our 140,000 people to come together to celebrate all that is great about the Isle of Wight. It should be a celebration of everything that is wonderful about this fabulous place”.
