Islanders will once again gather at Newport War Memorial for a service of Remembrance this coming Remembrance Sunday, starting at 10:45.
His Majesty’s representative, Lord-Lieutenant Mrs Susie Sheldon, the Island’s High Sheriff Graham Biss DL and council chair, Councillor Karl Love, will be in attendance as will the council’s Armed Forces Champion, Councillor Ian Dore.
They will lay wreaths alongside other dignitaries and representatives.
Proceedings will start with processions led by the Royal British Legion parade marshal from Drill Hall Road at 10:30 and by the council’s mace bearer from Newport Guildhall.
The processions will join in St Thomas’ Square for prayers before the formal silence. The wreath-laying ceremony will follow before the Remembrance service, led by the Rev Chris Bradish, Newport Town Rector and Isle of Wight Area Dean.
The Exhortation and Kohima Epitaph will be recited by Councillor Dore with a reading from the Bible by Councillor Love.
There will be a second parade following the service, where HM Lord-Lieutenant will take the salute in Newport High Street.
Council members will also be present and laying wreaths at a number of other services and ceremonies taking place in towns and villages across the Island on Sunday.
On Armistice Day (Monday 11th November) a bugler will signal the start of a 2-minute silence in St Thomas’ Square, Newport, at 11:00 to remember those who died in conflict.
Such a shame that politicians took away
many of the surviving WW2 veterans winter fuel
money.
Yet they wear the Poppy as though they care.
