Islanders gathered at war memorials across the Isle of Wight this morning (Remembrance Sunday) to pay their respects to the country’s fallen – including at Newport’s St Thomas’ Square.
On this special day, the Isle of Wight and the rest of the country commemorates the service and sacrifice of those defending our freedoms and protecting our way of life, including in World War I, World War II and other conflicts in more recent times.
It can be justly said of the slain that: “for your tomorrow, we gave our today”.
In the Island’s county town, the Remembrance Day Parade marched through Pyle Street, St James Square and the High Street. His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant Susie Sheldon took the salute.
Those taking part in the parade included military veterans, army reserves, cadets, scouts, beavers, brownies, and local dignitaries.
Richard Quigley MP was among those to lay a wreath as the crowds stood in respectful silence.
A 2-minute silence will be held on Armistice Day tomorrow (Monday) at 11:00.

Today at the Cenotaph the Prime Minister and six previous prime ministers all laid wreaths. It is my view that they were all just giving lip service to
‘and we shall remember them’ for their very actions have reduced the armed forces to a shadow of what it was and what it should be if this country is to survive. In short, are they not traitors?
