The Isle of Wight pétanque community has celebrated a successful year of competition while raising hundreds of pounds for charity at its annual presentation night, held in Cowes earlier this month.
The event took place on Saturday 7th February at the Isle of Wight Community Club and was attended by more than 50 players along with family members.
The evening was jointly hosted by Pétanque England Isle of Wight, which organises regional competitions and the Isle of Wight team for the annual Inter-Regional Championships, and the Isle of Wight Pétanque League, responsible for running the summer and autumn leagues.
As in previous years, perpetual trophies were presented to winners of regional events, leagues and league competitions. However, in a change from tradition, the teams that won the two leagues and the league competitions chose not to receive individual trophies, instead opting to donate funds to charity.
Both committees agreed that all money raised on the night would be donated to the Mountbatten Hospice and were pleased to welcome Harri McNeil, Community Fundraiser, to the event.
A raffle was held during the evening, with proceeds also going to the hospice. Additional donations were made on the night, resulting in a total of £778 being raised, which was presented to Mountbatten Hospice at the event.
