HJ Bennett, Ryde Demolition and Stoneham Construction are to appear at Portsmouth Crown Court following the death of 53-year-old David Shayler on a construction site in Newport back in 2016.
On the morning of 13th October 2016, emergency services were called to Atkinson Drive following an incident involving a bricklayer. The injured individual, Mr Shayler of High Street, Ryde, was airlifted to Southampton General Hospital where he later succumbed to his serious head injury.
Now, almost 3 years later, a number of Isle of Wight firms and individuals are being prosecuted by the Health and Safety Executive for alleged failings.
• HJ Bennett has been charged with failing to discharge general health and safety duty to a person other than an employee.
• Ryde Demolition has been charged with contravening a health and safety regulation
• Stoneham Construction has been charged with contravening a health and safety regulation
• Nigel Bennett, 52, of Foreland Road, Bembridge has been charged with failure to discharge health and safety duty to a person other than an employee
• Neil Harrison, 60, of Gordon Close, Binstead has been charged with contravening a health and safety regulation
Following an appearance at Portsmouth Magistrates Court on Monday, the case has been adjourned and sent to Portsmouth Crown Court for a hearing on 29th October.
No pleas have been entered.
Think it’s very unfair to name people
It’s amazing that anything gets built with all these H &S vipers and shady lawyers hiding round the corner ready to feast.
Government can’t bear local firms to make a living, they cannot afford the huge costs of the H and S like massive firms, which is JUST what HMG want. To end small firms so as they can have huge Taylor Wimpy type builders only.
A sad day if that happens.
