The Christians Against Poverty (CAP) Debt Centre Isle of Wight is hoping to raise £30,000 to offer free help to more households in financial crisis.
A group of churches on the Isle of Wight have been partnering with UK debt help charity Christians Against Poverty (CAP) for 2 years, helping local people out of debt and providing practical and emotional support. But, this winter, the need for the service is expected to increase as people struggle to afford to live, and with 2 new local debt coaches currently training to offer this free, face to face support, urgent funding is needed to meet this demand.
Treasurer for the CAP Debt Centre, Nigel Cox, says:
“This is a desperate situation for many families on the Island, who are living in poverty. As most of us prepare to celebrate Christmas soon with our loved ones, those most impacted by the cost of living crisis are just focused on surviving right now. For many, their only thought is: ‘How can I afford to keep myself and my kids warm and stop us from going hungry?’
It’s heartbreaking to see some of the situations people are in. But, as a group of churches, we’re determined to help people in our community as much as we can. We offer free local, face-to-face debt help, practical and emotional support, and emergency aid such as fuel vouchers and food shops for people in
crisis.“Providing this service costs a lot of money, and so, if they’re able, we’re asking our amazing local community to support us in helping our neighbours who are in desperate need because of the cost of living crisis.
“We expect to see demand rise in the foreseeable future, and we want to be ready and have the resources we need to help as many local people as possible. The generosity of the community is going to be vital this winter and beyond to help people on the Island stay warm and healthy. By donating, you really will be helping to save lives. Our new team are training and ready to start seeing their first local clients in January, but we want to ensure they have the financial support to do the work for the next two years”
