Another intense heatwave could be heading for the Isle of Wight next week, with temperatures potentially climbing back into the mid to high 30s by Wednesday.
The rest of this week is expected to remain rather pleasant, with temperatures slightly above average and just a little patchy rain at times over the next few days.
From Thursday onwards, conditions are forecast to become more settled, with temperatures gradually beginning to rise. By the weekend, much of the Isle of Wight is likely to see plenty of sunshine, with temperatures reaching the high 20s.
But Jamie Russell, Chief Forecaster at IW Met Service, says the hot weather is expected to return next week – but the exact intensity of next week’s heat will depend on the position of a developing area of high pressure.
Forecast mapping for Wednesday (8th July) currently shows temperatures of around 37c across the South of England, raising concerns of another spell of extreme heat.
Jamie Russell, Chief Forecaster at IW Met Service, has said:
“The jet stream – which drives our wind, rain and active weather – is expected to take a huge diversion around the UK, allowing settled weather to develop as a new area of high pressure builds across the country, at least for a few days.
“However, the exact position of that high is crucial. If it settles over the UK or just to our west, we’ll experience the sort of moderate heat that we see most summers.
“If, however, it shifts a little further east, it could draw much hotter air northwards and we may end up with another spell of heat that rivals what we experienced last week.
“At this stage, though, there’s still considerable uncertainty over the exact position of the high, so it’s far too early to say with any confidence which scenario will unfold”.
