St Mary’s Hospital is heading into a very busy Easter Weekend in an already fragile situation and has said it desperately needs the help of Islanders to keep urgent and emergency care services free for people with life-threatening illnesses or injuries.
The BMA and HCSA have announced junior doctors’ strikes running from 06:59 on Tuesday 11th April until 06:59 on Saturday 15th April. This is 4 days of strikes coming immediately after a 4-day bank holiday weekend. The days leading into and immediately after bank holiday weekends are already challenging for the NHS.
Sarah Gladdish, Deputy Medical Director said:
“These strikes come at a time when high levels of staff are on annual leave due to school Easter holiday and when the Island will be welcoming large numbers of visitors; this will very likely cause increased pressure on our services and affect how quickly we can respond to demand, causing significant delays for patients.
“During strike action we will prioritise resources to protect emergency treatment, critical care, neonatal care, maternity, and trauma, and ensure we prioritise patients who have waited the longest for elective care and cancer surgery. We will only cancel appointments and procedures where it is absolutely necessary and will reschedule immediately, where possible. If you have an appointment, please attend unless you are contacted to rearrange.”
The hospital is asking for everyone’s support with this including local GPs, Care Homes and Island residents.
Families and friends are being asked to support the NHS by collecting patients from hospital as soon as they are ready to be discharged and to consider offering short term support and care for their loved ones at home.
Islanders are being asked to support the NHS by:
- Collecting family and friends from hospital as soon as they are ready to be discharged to free up beds for those who need them
- Consider supporting your friends or family at home if you are able to – there is financial help available
- Supporting friends, family and neighbours with shopping and collecting prescriptions if needed
- Think about the most appropriate NHS service for your needs and to only call 999 in the event of a life-threatening illness or injury
- Visit NHS 111 online or call NHS 111 for heath advice, or alternatively contact your local pharmacist or GP
Sooo the doctors don’t want to work so you’re asking the public for help…what a backwards and twisted world we live in. Like you didn’t know what you were going into when you chose to become a junior doctor. Ridiculous.
They have realised they have a real voice and, since Brexit, and the anti-immigrant attitude it fostered, can’t be simply replaced by doctors from overseas.
One of two things will happen:
They get a pay deal they are happy with and you get continued free healthcare.
The NHS collapses, healthcare in the UK goes fully private, they get massive pay rises paid for our of the massive health insurance premiums you will be paying. $8000 a year is typical in the US.
Either way, they will get what they want.
depends on who blinks first – I am betting that if the government just say – no work, no pay – the NHS staff will be back at work within a few weeks, when they haven’t got any money to buy food or electric.
plus the fact, if the A and E department wasn’t festooned with the same faces suffering from hypochondria, whose only real purpose is to burden the NHS with their presence, to talk about their lame, BS excuses for being there, then there wouldn’t be any queues.
I personally know at least three people who turn up at A and E, for the slightest little thing, no matter how trivial it is – “to be on the safe side” – it is these burdensome s cumbags that need to be told “FO” and only come back, if you actually have something wrong
Yet another cry for help.
Isn’t it about time the NHS realised they are there to support the citizens, NOT the other way round???
That’s what we pay for.
The NHS as never been free, we actually pay for it.

Oh here we go again… don’t come in unless you have to – it’s a hospital, not a theme park… although the queues in a&e could fool many.
How this establishment has the gall to associate itself with the word “Hospital” fails me.
For several decades it has failed miserably in its primary task and if I was to describe some of the current practices and policies in place, not even mentioning neglect or discrimination, most decent people would be appalled. A very large toilet brush is required to clean out the numerous ‘managers’ who are directly responsible for the chaos. If this does not take place then there will be no change as we approach the impending complete collapse.
wouldn’t be anywhere near collapse if they introduced some charges for certain services – then the hoards of effing hypochondriacs wouldn’t be able to turn up 3 times a week.
Carry on voting conservative and next time they win we’ll see the actual dismantling and privatisation of the NHS. We are more than a decade in of planned under-funding and they want you to be distracted by news like this. Don’t fall for it. Stop voting for them or suffer the consequences.
