Electorates across the Isle of Wight are set to go to the polls for a General Election on 12th December – the first time this has happened in December since 1923.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson hopes that the pre-Christmas election will lead to more Conservative seats being won across the country to break the Brexit deadlock in the House of Commons – potentially before the year is out.
Bob Seely MP is expected to once again stand for the Conservatives following his landslide victory in 2017, which saw him gain 38,190 votes overall. It was a triumphant win over Labour’s Julian Critchley who received 17,121 votes. The Green Party’s Vix Lowthion – confirmed to be standing for the party – will be hoping to increase her votes from 12,915.
Nick Stuart will be standing for the Lib Dems, Peter Wiltshire for the Brexit Party and Councillor Karl Love will stand as an independent candidate. Labour are yet to announce a candidate, as are UKIP.
74,576 voters stepped out for the last election on 8th June 2017, representing a turnout of 67.38%. The turnout this time around could go one of two ways; Islanders are keen to get Brexit sorted (the Island was a strong leave area) but the vote just 2 weeks’ before Christmas may result in fewer people making the effort.
Polling stations will open bright and early on 12th December, closing at 22:00. The count is expected to take place in Newport that evening with a result delivered at around 03:00 in the morning.
Island Echo will be bringing you all the latest election news and coverage throughout polling day, as well as reporting live from the count.

What a waste of money the hard working people’s money ( mps waste of space
“The Green Party’s Vix Lowthion – confirmed to be standing for the party – will be hoping to increase her votes from 12,915.”
I doubt that will happen. She took the Remain vote last time, this time it will go to the Labour Party, now they have come off the fence. Few people are interested in Green policy, she’ll be lucky to retain her core vote of a couple of thousand.
Oh great. Six weeks of propaganda, distorted truths etc. Right, television off, radio off, stop the newspaper and letterbox sealed. After the last 3+ years fiasco does anyone expected to be voted for?
Peter Wiltshire will be standing for the Brexit party.
Our priorities for the island are,
1. Sort out the Ferry Companies. Fair fares for Islanders.
2. Revise the housing plan to meet local needs. No over development.
3. More resources for our N.H.S services. Stop centralisation and “offshoring”.
4. Our Schools require adequate funding.
5. Recognise our special Island needs.
6. Review new transport schemes. Prioritise solving the floating bridge saga.

Only the brexit party will bring a clean break brexit. Boris’s deal is a new EU treaty, it does NOT allow us to leave the EU.
Brexit party, for Queen and Country, not for profit and the privileged.
Well said sir, the others have had nearly fours to do nothing, maybe it’s time to vote for a new party? I voted conservative last time, never again!
At the EU election the Brexit party got a massive majority on the island. Three times the votes than the 2nd placed party.
Change UK 1,107
Conservative and Unionist 3,577
Green 6,855
Labour 2,481
Lib Dem 6,557
Brexit Party 19,392
Socialist Party of Great Britain 39
UK European Party 127
UKIP 1,292

But this time i would imagine remainers will all vote Lib.
Ovener with a holiday home on the Island! I don’t think so.
That is a concern, not everyone has the luck of being able to work and live on the island. Sometimes life prevents you from living in the town you were born in. 🙁
I hate the peace in Ireland and hope Scotland leaves the UK.
I love hedge fund managers and I hate workers rights.
I’m sick of free health care and hate being forced to eat safe food.
I understand the burdens of our millionaires. We need to defend them from EU tax avoidance laws and costly regulations.
Lets get no deal done, make the necessary sacrifices and give the rich the helping hand they so desperately need.
I am a moron.
Nice to hear from the local Tory supporters listing their manifesto Wasp Star. You forgot to add being voted in to get brexit done and failing to do so for almost four years. BTW the ‘deal’ boris has negotiated is a new EU treaty. When myself and my husband voted to leave there was never any talk about needing a ‘deal’. The remain parliament made it up so that they don’t have to deliver brexit.
SO WE ARE HAVING A GENRAL ERECTION SAYS EVERYTHING ABOUT THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT COULDENT RUN A BATH TOTAL WASTE OF OXYGEN WONT BE VOTING
Fine it’s your choice. But do us a favour and don’t post a comment on the outcome. In the meantime if anyone wants to remain vote Labour or Lib Dem’s. If you want to leave put Bob Sealy back in. Try not to get stressed out. Paddy East Cowes
I voted Brexit last time but no point now unless we want another three years of utter crap
