Yarmouth Bridge will be closed for a day in November for inspection and maintenance work.
The work by Island Roads, is scheduled to take place on Monday 10th November.
Because a cherry picker will be used to inspect components at the top of the bridge, calm weather is required and so Tuesday 11th November and Wednesday 12th November have been set aside as alternative dates if it is too windy on the target date.
Island Roads will also use the closure to undertake other maintenance work on the structure.
The usual diversion will be in place via Wilmingham Lane and The Middle Road during the closure.
Yarmouth Harbour Commissioners have been informed and high-masted river traffic is advised to undertake any necessary travel that involves a bridge opening outside of work hours (09:00-16:00) as any other movements will only be accommodated if possible.
Pedestrian access will be maintained during work.
Updates on the progress of work will be issued to the local media and via Island Roads’ X feed.
Another mess of a road closure, Havenstreet, Wroxall, what the hell is going on, years and years of neglect by this crap council that’s for sure. Southern Vectis are taking the piss as well, Wroxall is all but cut off if you work in Newport and Ryde, and have to get home, then good luck. The response from Southern Vectis, was that the shuttle buses are funded by the utility company doing the works, and when asked about just 1 earlier bus and 1 later bus to get to upper Ventnor and Wroxall, I was told, the funding needs to come from the council and then lack of drivers and then they need drivers for school runs, even though the school were closed. What a load of hogwash, I also asked about the 12 week closure for Wroxall, and was told “a more robust” plan was in place, but when I asked about this they couldn’t tell me even what it was, Utter crap, and a totally useless response. The local councillor is very very quiet and not pushing for more buses it seems at all. Perhaps the Echo could investigate this total mess that is going on all over the island.
Similarly Copse Lane and Pixley Hill in Freshwater has been closed for months for Southern Water work and is not due to open until the end of February. So for over 6 months and during the worst of the winter there is no bus service serving Norton. Nearest stop is Yarmouth. Southern Vectis – no response about a simple slight change of route where Norton could still be served.
The only footpath along Hallets Chute floods during heavy rain and pedestrians have to walk in the busy road, again, Council and Island Road say they have no funds to repair it. As for the Parish council, what a waste of money they are.
