The Island’s MP, Andrew Turner, was one of dozens of Members of Parliament to back the ‘Save Our Supplements’ campaign at a meeting in the Palace of Westminster this week.
The campaign, run by Newport West Councillor, Chris Whitehouse, is being mounted to prevent the European Union banning higher potency vitamin and mineral supplements.
Speaking after the meeting, Andrew said:
“Millions of British people have been taking safe and popular vitamin and mineral supplements for decades without any evidence of any harm, and with a great deal of evidence of the benefits they bring. Europe should simply stop meddling in matters like this which are best left to individual countries to decide for themselves.”
Cllr Chris Whitehouse, who is Director of Strategy of campaign group Consumers for Health Choice which is behind the campaign, adds:
“The Food Supplements Directive poses a real threat to the right of consumers to buy health promoting products of their choice. We’re grateful to Andrew Turner and to the dozens of MPs, including both Tony Blair and David Cameron, who have supported our campaign over the last few years. We are determined to resist the banning of healthy food supplements.”
The meeting was hosted by Labour MP, Kate Hoey, and Conservative MP, Pauline Latham OBE.
