Island Line trains are to be suspended for around 12 hours on Saturday night and into Sunday morning, it has been announced.
The Ryde Pier Head to Shanklin service will cease to operate at 18:30 tomorrow evening (8th October) and will resume again at 07:00 on Sunday 9th October.
It comes as a result of mainland national rail strikes, which means Network Rail is unable to provide sufficient power to Island Line.
The nationwide strike on Saturday is set to include Network Rail’s Electrical Control Room Operators (ECROs) working at Eastleigh Electrical Control Room, which provides power to the outer part of the South Western Railway (SWR) network, including the Island Line.
Mark Dunn, Island Line General Manager, has said:
“We are very sorry that the knock-on impact of mainland rail strikes will inconvenience our customers on Saturday night and Sunday morning’’.
I was unaware of an extension cable running from the mainland to the island to power Island Lines trains.
I guess someone has literally ‘pulled the plug’!
A comment from someone that clearly doesn’t know how a railway works
It’s because all rail operators have to have complete control of its own electric supplies incase of emergencies, maintenance, and this is done by having electric control operators of which Islandline falls under Eastleigh ECO and its them that are going on strike.

I agree with that …as with the floating bridge …
Does that mean they will turn off the lights at Brading station instead them all being left on all night and we can have a lie in on Sunday without the very loud hooter waking us up every morning at 6.30
