Almost 4 weeks after flash flooding led to Ryde’s railway tunnel being filled up with water, Island Line has resumed services to Ryde Esplanade and onward to Ryde Pier Head. It was on 25th October that torrential downpours hit the Isle of Wight, causing the worst flooding in the Monktonmead area for decades. As a result, the railway track between Ryde St Johns and the Esplanade was left underwater, causing significant damage to the infrastructure. Although the tunnel was emptied of water fairly quickly, further adverse weather less than a week later led to damage on Ryde Pier, which hindered efforts to re-open the line. Train services resumed between Ryde St John’s and Shanklin within a matter of days, but it is only now that the entire line has re-opened. 
“We would like to thank customers for their patience over recent weeks as we have worked to get the full service back up and running again, following the heavy rain and flooding on the Isle of Wight, including Storm Ciaran”.
May be better to turn it into a permanent canal. Don’t fight nature, work with it.
A water taxi could replace the train, and a canal would open up a money making venture and bring tourists here to enjoy such too.
Ivy’s tarmac could then be used on the pot holed roads. A win win
An interesting proposition, but would passengers want to spend 2 hours travelling from Shanklin to Ryde to work or shop or to catch a boat to the mainland.
You could add a canal to the cycle route from Sandown to Newport, where it could give access to and from the Medina – also a canal from Brading to Bembridge, connecting to the harbour – creating a whole new tourist industry to the Island
And yet morton common is still closed, it would appear that the railway works harder than island roads

This is actually not true. The train is stopping at the Esplanade and not going to the end of the pier.
2 trains an hour, 1 goes to the pier, the other terminates at esplanade
That is not actually true, 1 train per hour has been serving the Pier Head as per the timetable since the start of service this morning.
